For all their talk about limiting spending, NY Senate Republicans don’t seem too concerned about money these days:
Incumbent GOPers, who’ve boasted of belt-tightening since taking over the Senate in January, have hired 27 new staffers – at a cost of $1 million to taxpayers. Republicans have also handed out more than $284,600 in raises to existing employees since the start of the year, Senate payroll records show.
It was only two weeks ago that State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos punted on redistricting reform, insisting that “…our focus right now must be on getting a fiscally responsible budget enacted by April 1st.”
While an increase in staff is expected once a new party takes power, Dick Dadey of watchdog group Citizens Union warns, “…they can’t criticize one day and veer toward repeating the Democrats’ mistake the next day.”
