Last night City Councilmember Margaret Chin spoke to the Manhattan Young Democrats about the importance of real rent reform. Our current rent regulations are set to expire on June 15th, unless the State Senate renews them. While renewal is important, Councilmember Chin reminded us that what we really need to do is strengthen the existing laws. Through both vacancy deregulation and “luxury” deregulation, landlords are able to exploit the current regulations and raise rents too exorbitantly.
MYD has officially endorsed the Real Rent Reform campaign, which aims to strengthen our rent laws, making it easier for working class New Yorkers to continue to live in New York City. Check out the Real Rent Reform website to learn more about how you can help protect our rent laws!
