Join Me in Getting the Women’s Equality Act Passed!

Take Action

Guest post from MYD member and New York State Young Democrats LGBTQ Chair Katherine Brezler.

The remaining days of the State legislative session are critical for the passage of the Women’s Equality Act. Please tell our representatives on both sides of the aisle that we want the complete package, with all its components, to be approved. We are not leaving our reproductive health behind!

I’m writing in particular to urge MYDers to ask State Senator David Carlucci and the members of the Independent Democratic Conference to vote for the Women’s Equality Act.

Here’s where to reach him:

My family has a long history in Rockland County, and I am deeply offended by State Senator Carlucci not voting for equality. I supported Senator Carlucci when he ran for Town Clerk and when he ran for the State Senate. But now I’m asking that he support me and my rights as a New Yorker seeking fair elections, as a woman who demands access to reproductive health, and as a member of the LGBTQ community who says my LGBTQ brothers and sisters deserve to be recognized without prejudice in the work force.

I’m now writing and calling on you fine folks to do the right thing and write or call Senator Carlucci and say, “We helped get you elected because we hope you would represent our values. Our values are equality for all people in their workplace, representation through fair elections, and access to women’s reproductive rights.” If you have a family member who lives in his district, I beseech you to ask them to join us in calling for a vote.

By the way, last month MYD voted to include the Women’s Equality Agenda in our 2013 Policy Platform:

MYD supports the Women’s Equality Agenda, Governor Cuomo’s 10 point plan, which aims to:
Protect a Woman’s Freedom of Choice
Achieve Pay Equity
Stop Sexual Harassment in All Workplaces
Allow for the Recovery of Attorneys’ Fees in Employment and Credit and Lending Cases
Strengthen Human Trafficking Laws
End Family Status Discrimination
Stop Source-of-Income Discrimination
Stop Housing Discrimination for Victims of Domestic Violence
Stop Pregnancy Discrimination Once and For All
Protect Victims of Domestic Violence by Strengthening Order-of-Protection Laws

Thank you for your time! Together, let’s make this happen!
