A message from our friends at the Staten Island Young Democrats. (This an interesting read about a group that doesn’t visit us very frequently here in Manhattan – the Tea Party!) Please join SIYD if can.
For almost 50 years, Staten Island has celebrated Irish heritage with its annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. While many look forward to the Irish step dancing, myriad of marching basset hounds and even the “Forest Avenue” scene of bars, this year will bring something different to the table.
Forget “The Irish are coming!” The Tea Partiers are coming. And they’re coming with their propaganda, false claims and faulty ideals. Recently, the last few parade days evoked a feeling of solidarity with elected officials and individual clubs marching together in unison. That was until last year when the Tea Party (the only political party to march as such in years) handed out copies of the Constitution. They’ve registered to march again this year (and as far as we know, they were the only club to do so), politicizing an event that has otherwise been fairly peaceful in years past.
In an effort to balance the scale at this year’s parade, the Young Democrats of Richmond County will be marching under the YDRC banner for the first time in years and will be joined by other island-wide democrats.
We’re calling on our fellow Young Democrats for support. Come march under our banner this Sunday to remind Staten Islanders that the parade supporters and marchers do so to celebrate Irish heritage, and not to make a political point.
Breakfast for anyone joining will be hosted at 11am, at the home of Samantha Giordano & Dominick DeRubbio of SI Young Dems. Arrangements can also be made for anyone traveling to/from the Staten Island Ferry.
DATE: Sunday March 6, 2011
