The Talking Transition Tent set up on Canal and 6th Avenue is a must see as a cap to the 2013 municipal election cycle.
Funded primarily by George Soros and his Open Society Foundation and is operated by Andrea Batista Schlesinger, the tent offers numerous interactive opportunities for anyone (100% free) to voice their thoughts and concerns about what the new administration should focus on. There are stickers and notes which can be left, videos which can be recorded, lectures which can be attended and snacks to be nibbled upon.
The Mayor-elect himself stopped by earlier this week and tried on one of the ubiquitous an orange windbreakers that surveyors have been sporting.
On Thursday afternoon I was part of a great panel, “The Future of Harlem & Northern Manhattan,” representing MYD’s thoughts on a variety of issues from Affordable housing to policing to immigration issues. Along with City Council District Councilman-elect Mark Levine, West Harlem Progressive Democratic Club President Corey Oretga, John Ruiz, Founder & CEO of Our Firefighters Children’s Foundation; Ariel Ferreira, Member of Licensing Committee of Community Board 12; Londel Davis, Founder & CEO of American Fire Control. It was moderated by Rev. Jamaal Nelson, District Leader for the 70th A.D. Part D.
