Senators Introduce Constitutional Amendment To Overturn Citizens United
To those who think elections don’t matter think again. Thank you to the 6 Democrats with some spine. The title says it all but you can read more about here. If one or both of your Senators are among the 6, call and thank them. If they are not; call and lambaste them. Phone numbers are here.
Republicans Obstruct Finance Reform
The Republicans today blocked the Finance Bill for the third straight day. The Republicans agree that something needs to be done about financial services reform, and even that the legislation will be approved, but are unwilling to move to debate over some minor details. The Republicans are facing a difficult path in trying to keep this up. One could see the type of pressure that the Republicans are facing from this exchange on this morning’s Today show: “Senator Collins, that does bring up the irony here,” the Today host, Matt Lauer said. “Both of you agree changes have to be made, that this is an unacceptable situation. And yet for the second time yesterday, Republicans blocked further debate on this … More >>
Races In 2010 Are Going To Be Trouble For Both Sides
It’s no surprise that with the current stagnation in the Senate and a fear of an anti-incumbent backlash, some Democrats are increasingly worried of what this November might mean for the balance in Congress and the future of President Obama’s legislative agenda. However before we all start assuming the worst, Nate Silver points out on fivethirtyeight.com, that Republicans have races of their own that are going to need some defending: Even if Republicans can recruit a good candidate in Washington or New York, and make smart decisions in California, and win the toss-ups in places like Illinois, and not screw up any of the seven or so races in which they appear to be favored, they also have to make sure that Democrats don’t take over any of their own seats. … More >>
Harold Ford, Jr. On Meet The Press
Former Tennessee Congressman Harold Ford, Jr. has been considering running for U.S. Senate in the special election against Gillibrand here in New York. There has been a lot of discussion about whether Ford is a New Yorker, what his positions really are, and whether he would be a good Senator from New York. Gillibrand’s campaign and the Ford camp have already been trading barbs. Both Ford and Gillibrand have also been courting donors. Ford recently told NY1 that he would file his first tax return in New York this year. He reiterated that fact this morning on Meet the Press when he said “[I] [p]aid taxes on all New York income the last two years. And, for the first time, … More >>
New York Democracy?
Last week, Representative Carolyn Maloney, whose district covers the East Side of Manhattan and parts of Queens dropped her bid to challenge Senator Kirsten Gillibrand in the Democratic primary. Borough President Scott Stringer also abandoned his exploratory efforts into running for the Senate seat. No matter what your thoughts are on Maloney, Stringer or Gillibrand individually, this all begs the question: when did New York get a government-by-appointment? Clyde Haberman’s July 13th column for the New York Times points out: There are six statewide elective offices. Four of them are now filled by politicians who were not the people’s choices. They fell into their positions by virtue of someone else’s malefaction or ambition. The governor, as noted, is unelected. … More >>
Sixty is the Unloneliest Number that you ever see
Arlen Specter (D-PA) I have decided to run for re-election in 2010 in the Democratic primary. Granted this is more because the PA State GOP was going to oust him (for supporting the Stimulus Package) rather than him really feeling like a Democrat, and he still won’t be jumping in line on some issues (he couldn’t be worse than Lieberman, or Ben Nelson) – but either way, it’s good for the Dems, it’s bad for the GOP, and it’s further proof that the moderates of the Republican party are not coming back into power anytime soon, if ever again. Perhaps that’s sad, but real none-the-less. Enjoy your 20% of the population guys!
