Real vs. Cosmetic Reform for the Defense Budget

The DOD budget is a blackhole into which billions of dollars disappear every year, with hardly any meaningful oversight.  Apparently, there is a huge paper trail indicating the DOD’s refusal to allow any real financial accountability at the so-called "Government Accountability Office (GAO)". The Pentagon has, until now, refused to tell Congress and the public how they spend their taxpayer dollars. If Obama has his way, this will longer be the case. The administration has taken the first step in enforcing independent oversight by asking the Office of Management and Budget to draw up the new set of rules for DOD contracting. Wanted: Better NYS Democrats

As a relative newcomer to New York politics, I sometimes hear about the severe dysfunction up in Albany. I’ve always  paid attention to government accountability issues at the federal level–but what about transparency and better governance right here in New York state? As The Albany Project makes clear, electing Democrats is simply not enough: I hate the secrecy. I hate not knowing who voted for what in which committee and where that bill went and what the debate on the floor was and more importantly what the debate in the back room was.
