Let the Count Begin!

This month, New York City will report on the actual number of jobs created in the five boroughs by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), commonly known as “the stimulus package”. Unprecedented federal disclosoure requirements mandate specific rules for job tracking.  The first ARRA reporting period closes this week. The City is expected to release employment numbers on October 30, 2009. Currently, the City tracks job estimates and posts them on the Mayor’s Office of Operations’ NYC Stimulus Tracker website. I was recently at conference where City officials were careful to stress the word estimate when fielding questions regarding job creation. Fixing Healthcare = Stimulus?

In a quick read, this post and its sequel makse sense to me, but I’d love to hear what other MYDers’ think. The basic argument is that our current healthcare system (which ties coverage to employment) has a large array of costs, both quantified and hidden. If a universal, independent-of-employment solution were implemented, it could be a significant boost to the economy: People trapped in jobs because new jobs will not cover their pre-existing conditions, or because companies fear the health insurance cost impact of older workers.  Laid off workers who can’t get new jobs for the same reason.  Older companies and communities drowning due the cost of health care for their retirees. Branding Recovery

Stimulus backed projects to receive special emblem/logo. What more would expect from the team who changed the way design and campaigns can work together… Wonder if we’ll see it on the side of the new Lexington Avenue Line in 2015, or perhaps as a patch on the sleeves of teachers or cops who won’t lose their jobs… The Political Punch
