Let the Count Begin!
This month, New York City will report on the actual number of jobs created in the five boroughs by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), commonly known as “the stimulus package”. Unprecedented federal disclosoure requirements mandate specific rules for job tracking. The first ARRA reporting period closes this week. The City is expected to release employment numbers on October 30, 2009. Currently, the City tracks job estimates and posts them on the Mayor’s Office of Operations’ NYC Stimulus Tracker website. I was recently at conference where City officials were careful to stress the word estimate when fielding questions regarding job creation. I Need YOU (Says Recovery.gov)
As the head of the Recovery Act Accountability and Transparency Board (or RAT Board for short) Earl Devaney has an enormous — and, frankly, quite possibly close to impossible — task of eliminating waste, fraud and abuse of those federal dollars as they’re spent from coast to coast, from Alaska to Hawaii. Tough job. And so he’s turned to the Interwebs. All this week, NationalDialogue.org is hosting an online forum for the submission and evaluation of ideas for quickly building a Recovery.gov that both keeps tabs on the spending of recovery funds and creates a forum in which the public can help to spot bad behavior. CD20 Race Heats Up
The special election in CD20 has taken on national prominence in recent weeks. Tedisco has refused to take a stance on President Obama’s stimulus package, and the Republicans are approaching this race as an opportunity to turn it into a referendum on the administration’s economic policies. Both the national Democratic and Republican parties are now throwing $s at TV ads for CD20 : Prior to this week, the only nat’l cmte ads in this race were on the radio.
