“Sex, drugs and community boards?”

Last year MYD’s Vice President Ahmed Tigani made a commitment to get more young people involved in their local community boards.  We even hosted a representative from the Borough President’s office who spoke to our members about applying for membership. So imagine our delight to read this headline in today’s Politicker: Stringer Adds Youngsters To Community Board Earlier this year, Manhattan BP Scott Stringer announced a plan to infuse the stodgy community boards with new members in their 20?s and 30?s, and today he announced that half of the 82 new members of the community board fit that demographic. Not only are there more young people on the Manhattan Community Boards than ever before, but we are proud to say … More >>

Commission Will Send Term Limits Referendum To The Polls But Not Much Else

After half a year of work, the Charter Review Commission empanelled by Mayor Bloomberg is backing a list of seven proposals for approval at their scheduled meeting on August 23rd. The Charter Commission, a tool for institutional change since 1938, was charged with reviewing a laundry list of controversial issues including non-partisan elections, term limits for elected officials, suggesting changes to the land use review process and the duties of borough presidents and the public advocate in city government. Critics have argued that voters will be presented with a short-changed version of reform while important issues will be left unaddressed. Dr. Matthew Goldstein, chairman of the latest commission, argues that in light of the limited time they were given, the … More >>

MYD Goes To Dinner – Food For Thought Recap

Last night the CASE committee hosted it’s first event of the year: Food for Thought: Hunger in NYC. It was an amazing night!  We heard from Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer about food issues in NYC and his vision for a long-term food plan for the city, and Kristen Mancinelli of City Harvest about what we can do to help alleviate issues like obesity and food deserts across the five boroughs. Kate Barnhart and Jacqui Lewis also spoke about the work of New Alternatives and The Middle Project. Everyone who came got to eat — and experienced a little bit of food insecurity themselves.  Some diners ate McDonald’s with orange soda, while others enjoyed a four-course meal accompanied with fresh, … More >>

Census: It’s Important… Really, REEAALLLY Important

Right-wing radio is making an issue of the fact that the Census Bureau is over budget already. They also don’t think the money spent on the Super Bowl Commercial was wisely allocated.  I’m enormously supportive of the idea of the Census being everywhere, including the Super Bowl. In modern society, you have to be completely overwhelmed with something for it to register as a big deal. The Census is certainly a big deal. So I’m glad that I saw an ad at the movie theater last night. It’s on TV, fliers litter the streets, it’s in the papers, on the radio, even on the internet: Census 2010 Website (it’s actually pretty awesome; you should check it out). On that note, … More >>
