Are Democrats Slipping with Latino Voters ?
An eye popping headline on NPR’s website discussed the GOP strategically recruiting candidates and supporting the elections of Latinos in states like New Mexico, Florida and Nevada – all states won by Obama in 2008 – with the goal of shifting the loyalty of Latinos voters, one of the fastest growing ethnic groups nationwide. With an estimated 12 million registered voters (up from 9.7 million in 2008) looking for either party to convince them that their candidates will be the voice of their interests, Hispanics have been labeled as the “game-changer” constituency for 2012.
Republicans Hide Behind Budget Woes To Avoid Moving On Redistricting Reform In Albany.
Despite a pledge to New Yorkers throughout the state to pursue comprehensive reform aimed at stripping the politics out of redrawing election districts, State Republicans have dug in and refused to debate any one of the bills that have been submitted by lawmakers to address this issue. I mean take your pick: Senator Gianaris, Assemblyman Jefferries and even Governor Cuomo all have presented bills to make the process more transparent and bi-partisan but Senate Majority Speaker Dean Skelos has time and again avoided the issue citing concern over the growing budget deficit as the main focus for his conference and that undertaking any other legislation could be harmful to getting our books in order. While I wouldn’t want to ask … More >>
Republicans Get a New A****** for Denying Healthcare to 9/11 First Responders
The Republicans have shown their true stripes, and they are neither Red nor White. This bit is utterly brilliant – and I don’t say that about Jon Stewart a lot (yeah, I’m still a Democrat under 30). If you think the Republican Party owes 9/11 first responders a deep apology and healthcare this is the piece for you. The Paladino Threat
Fringe lunatic Carl Paladino has almost zero chance of becoming the next governor of New York – but all of his hate-spewing along the campaign trail still matters. Consider his latest round of bigoted remarks from Sunday (the day before National Coming Out Day). Paladino told a group of Hasidic Jewish leaders that he does not want children to be “brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid or successful option” and added that the gay pride parade is “not an example we should be showing our children.” Tragically, his homophobic comments come amidst a rash of suicides by gay youth around the nation and a string of vicious attacks against gay men right here in New York. Democrats And Republicans Find Common Ground On Education Reform
Everyday the words and actions of strategists, legislators and pundits feed the growing polarization between the two main parties. In New York State for example, important legislation continues to be shelved or stagnate as partisan politics contributes to an increasingly ineffective government. Despite this challenging environment, some researchers have been making gains on describing a specific agenda — one on which Democrat and Republicans can find some common ground. Researchers at Harvard’s Program on Education Policy and Governance believe that in the realm of education policy, the divisions between the parties are “quite minor.” Despite continued resistance to a unified plan, education reform recommendations like merit-based pay or the growing popularity for online education is embraced by leaders on both sides. … More >>
RNC Fundraising Scandal
Last week Zac posted about an RNC sex club scandal. Well apparently Michael Steele just can’t catch a break. According to a former RNC official, in late 2009 the Republican National Committee conspired with the Michigan Republican party to skirt campaign finance regulations and artificially inflate their fundraising numbers. The scam allegedly went something like this: on December 31st, 2009, 15 Michigan donors gave a total of $456,000 to the RNC. Two months later the RNC distributed $500,000 to the Michigan Republican Party. Why would these donors give all that money to the RNC, only to have it given over to the state party? Because federal law limits individual donations to a $10,000 yearly maximum, so by donating the money … More >>
