SGK: WTF?
Unless you have been oblivious to the news of the past 48 hours, you know that breast cancer charity Susan G. Komen — which holds a”race for the cure” in New York City every year — has ended its partnership with Planned Parenthood and will not renew their grant, which provided access to breast cancer screenings for women across the country. Komen claims this decision has nothing to do with politics, but the public isn’t buying it. Their CEO, Nancy Brinker, is a Republican. Their vice president, Karen Handel, is anti-choice. Handel ran for governor of Georgia unsuccessfully as a Republican in 2010 and on her campaign blog, she wrote she “did not support the mission of Planned Parenthood” and … More >>
The “Let Women Die” Bill
Republicans in Congress can’t find time to create a single job, but they certainly have time to put women’s lives at risk. Under H.R. 358, dubbed the “Protect Life Act” and sponsored by Rep. Joe Pitts (R-Pa.), hospitals that don’t want to provide abortions could refuse to do so, even for a pregnant woman with a life-threatening complication that requires a doctor terminate her pregnancy. Oh, but it doesn’t end there. In addition to changing the rules for hospitals, H.R. 358 would deny federal funding to any health care plan that includes abortion coverage, something that might cause insurance providers to stop covering abortions. This bill will never be signed into law. It is nothing more political posturing; red meat … More >>
New York, too
Unfortunately like most other states in the country, a bill has been introduced in New York by Assemblyman Steven Katz to ban Planned Parenthood — and other organizations that provide abortions — from receiving any state money. This wouldn’t just affect organizations like Planned Parenthood (never mind the fact that only 3% of their work involves abortions), but hospitals, clinics and community health centers that perform abortions. According to Crain’s, Richard Gottfried, chair of the Assembly Health Committee, publicly blasted the bill: “A bill like this doesn’t belong in New York,” Mr. Gottfried said in a statement. “I will do everything I can to stop it cold and to protect the right to access to health care, including abortion.” It would … More >>
49 States trying to restrict reproductive rights
A catch up on women’s news: Planned Parenthood did not lose it’s federal funding (yay!), and apparently it is perfectly acceptable to lie in the Senate if you are trying to make a point (boo!). “Not intended to be a factual statement,” was Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.)’s repsonse when he was called out on his blatant lie about Planned Parenthood. Kyl said “If you want an abortion, you go to Planned Parenthood, and that’s well over 90% of what Planned Parenthood does.” In reality, it is 3% (it was corrected in the Congressional Record). Almost 40 years after Roe v. Wade was passed, why is a woman’s right to choose still up for debate? Anti-choice conservatives are furiously trying to … More >>
Government to Shutdown over Planned Parenthood
Don’t be deceived by the Republican rhetoric that the near-government shutdown is about spending. It’s not about spending — it’s about religion and a war on women. What IS relevant to the budget discussion is the $700 billion we spend on the military every year. If we’re ever going to get this country on the right path, we need BOTH parties to start thinking more responsibly about our national priorities and what’s best for the American people.
