Espada Walks Out Of CBS Interview

When asked this weekend about whether he is really living in Westchester, State Senator Pedro Espada Jr. stormed off in the middle of Tv interview: He got testy when reporter Marcia Kramer reminded him that when she approached him last year outside his Mamaroneck home, he donned an orange ski cap and held a baby in front of his face to hide from the camera before speeding off in a car driven by his wife. “I was not hiding from anybody. I’ve owned that home since 1991,” he said. “This is not a mudslinging session, so I say. If you want to make it that, you can come hide in the bushes at my house and you repeat the same … More >>

Best Headline Ever (Pedro Edition)

So among other shenanigans, our pal State Senator Pedro Espada is kind of famous for not properly filing his campaign finance disclosure materials on time.  (Last May Gothamist quoted a Bronx pol saying that Pedro "does a cha-cha around the campaign finance law.”  Awesome.) You see, in addition to being a State Senator, Pedro Espada is also President and CEO of both Soundview Healthcare Network and Soundview Management Services (which provides janitorial services for Soundview Healthcare). Cuomo has subpoenaed Espada’s Senate records and his companies for months, but he has yet to comply. In his defence, non-disclosure is something of an art form for Espada … More >>

The Latest from Pedro!

From City Room, the latest on our favorite state senator… The State Senate majority leader, Pedro Espada Jr., is said to have parked his Mercedes-Benz in front of a fire hydrant by his Bainbridge House residence on Friday night with a police vehicle-identification placard illegally displayed to ward off potential tickets. The blocking of the hydrant irritated neighborhood residents, particularly after serious fires in the Bronx last month.

Rallying the Base

I just got back from a rally in Queens in support of Senator Malcolm Smith as Majority Leader. Of course, the guest of honor couldn’t make it, as he’s in Albany, taking care of business. But, it was an opportunity for those in his district to get vocal about what’s happened in the State Senate, what this coup means, and what can be done. Speakers included Reverend Floyd Flake, Councilman (and Comptroller Candidate) John Liu, Borough President Helen Marshall, Councilman Leroy Comrie, former Councilman Archie Spigner and other community leaders. It was interesting to see a community come together so quickly and fervently with support. Speakers cited how Senator Smith had been active and committed for decades – long before … More >>
