Open Seat Project: We Did It!
When you join the Manhattan Young Democrats, there is never a shortage of ways to get involved. Whether your focus is on an issue, a candidate or the party, we provide opportunities to join committees, create campaigns and make your positions heard. In the end, it’s always the work of those who volunteer that make the campaigns as successful as they are. One of our projects that exemplifies that strength and now has become a bi-annual tradition for MYD is the Open Seat Project. Beginning in 2009, The Open Seat Project was created to address our concern that hundreds of seats within the New York County Democratic Party structure remained vacant year after year. The position we’re specifically speaking about … More >>
Open Seat Kick-off!
MYD kicked off the 2011 campaign season with an Open Seat Petitioning party! About 30 novice County Committee hopefuls learned the ins and outs of petitioning and got to know their fellow candidates. This year we’re working directly with our local Democratic clubs and District Leaders to fill vacant County Committee seats. Our goal is to get young, progressive Democrats involved with the local political system. To see more pics from our event, check out MYD’s Facebook page.

County Committee Update: Deputy Mayor Wolfson says Hello
The last County Committee Executive Board meeting held March 10th was a real party; and why not, it was the first meeting in several months. Aside from complimentary sandwiches and cookies, County Leader Wright gave the Board a brief update on how the budget process was going in Albany saying that this was the worst budget he’d seen in his 16 years in the State Legislature. Following that, the assembled District Leaders and County Committee people were treated to a speech by and an unbridled Q&A session with Deputy Mayor Howard Wolfson. The Deputy Mayor’s speech centered largely around the improvements we’ve seen in the city during the Bloomberg administration. A lot of attention was paid to the fact that … More >>

Democratic Party In Manhattan
Party politics is complicated and people throw terms around like state committeeman, district leader, party club, and county committee and almost no one knows what they all mean. Over the last week or so, I’ve been working to decode the tea leaves and come to grips with all the various layers of the Democratic Party here in the city and the state. Districts The start of the confusion is that there are many different “districts” that every voter belongs to. Lets go through the types of districts that are important to Democratic party structure from biggest to smallest, starting with the Assembly District. As a disclaimer, I am only sure of this structure in Manhattan. The state committee is the … More >>
