Are Democrats Slipping with Latino Voters ?
An eye popping headline on NPR’s website discussed the GOP strategically recruiting candidates and supporting the elections of Latinos in states like New Mexico, Florida and Nevada – all states won by Obama in 2008 – with the goal of shifting the loyalty of Latinos voters, one of the fastest growing ethnic groups nationwide. With an estimated 12 million registered voters (up from 9.7 million in 2008) looking for either party to convince them that their candidates will be the voice of their interests, Hispanics have been labeled as the “game-changer” constituency for 2012.
Duncan Opens Wavier The Flood Gates For States Seeking Education Mandate Relief
With lawmakers on both sides of the ideological divide unable to come together on terms for a re-authorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (most recently renamed “No Child Left Behind” in 2001) State Education Departments began to apply in earnest to Sec. Duncan for exemptions from the school rating and student achievements benchmarks written into the language of NCLB. States have expressed their fear that schools (and students) will be unfairly labeled as failing – some states facing as much as 85% of their school districts labeled as “in need of improvement”. On top of that, not meeting those benchmarks will carry with them penalties that could hold up badly needed federal funding for local school districts already … More >>
President Obama and the DNC Reception in Harlem
-From Jon Reznick: Though I will always extol the glory of being able to move about freely, even climbing right on some stage when shooting public events, it is very nice sometimes to roll out to a special event *without* my camera, so I can just stand back and take part. Because of my connection to the illustrious network maintained and operated by the Manhattan Young Democrats, I was able to walk into an exclusive reception with the President of the United States. It’s actually not how I figured I’d be spending my Tuesday until a few days ago. On March 29, the Democratic Party held a reception at the Studio Museum in Harlem to thank the biggest financial supporters … More >>
HAPPENING NOW: A Real* Filibuster
No anonymous hold. No kabuki dance. No threats. Just Bernie Sanders, standing on the floor of the Senate for five hours already and still going strong, talking about job creation, tax policy, and why he thinks the Obama compromise plan is wrong. Watch it here on CSPAN. *I’ve edited the title to include the asterisk because Sanders is holding a “mock” filibuster, because the bill he would be blocking isn’t actually under consideration at the moment. But he’s still holding up the Senate and talking non-stop to make the statement…and probably to show he’s ready to do it again for real if he has to.
Reversal: “If It’s Take It or Leave It, We’ll Leave It”
That’s what Texas Democratic Rep. Lloyd Doggett said after the House Dems voted overwhelmingly in an internal meeting to reject the compromise proposal extending the Bush tax cuts that the President has put forward. More from NPR: The vote derailed what had seemed to be a grudging Democratic movement toward the tax package, and it wasn’t clear how much the deal would need to change for lawmakers to accept it. Asked what happens next, James Clyburn of South Carolina, the No. 3 person in the Democratic leadership, said, “I don’t know. We’ll wait and see.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said talks between Democrats and the White House would continue “in the days ahead” before the tax-cut legislation is considered again. … More >>
Hostage Negotiation
Speaking for myself only. The metaphor of the week is that folks whose unemployment is running out and middle-class taxpayers are hostages taken by the Republicans so they can demand their tax cuts for the ultra-rich. Our president is telling us that he’s playing the role of hostage negotiator, and he’s doing what he has to do to make sure the hostages don’t get hurt. Those of us who don’t want to see those tax cuts for the ultra-rich, then, are immature and irresponsible for wanting to put the hostages in harm’s way. I can live with this metaphor, but there’s still a problem with the logic.
