Obama Endorses Thompson
Democratic candidate for mayor Bill Thompson started off the week strong with a new poll showing he’s within single digits of the billionaire mayor. Now, he’s got the endorsement of the top Dem in the country:
“I am grateful and encouraged to receive the support of the President of the United States, especially on the day that Barack Obama is named a Nobel Prize Winner. It is a point of personal pride to receive this endorsement since I made my final decision to run for mayor of this great city while waiting on line to vote for President Obama. New Yorkers supported President Obama in historic numbers on November 4, 2008 and I look forward to that same support on November 3, 2009. I am deeply honored and thank our President for his support and confidence that I will be the next mayor of New York City.”

Tomorrow night is the night–the night your questions get answered by Democratic candidates for NYC mayor. As mentioned previously on this blog, MYD is teaming up with Living Liberally and Democracy for New York City to host our the 2009 Mayoral Forum on August 11th at The Tank (354 W. 45th St). The doors will open at 6:30, and each candidate will be grilled one at a time.
CLICK HERE TO SUBMIT YOUR QUESTION!
(Note: the link above leads to a crowdsourcing tool called Ideascale. You submit an ‘idea’, or in this case, a question, and it gets voted up or down by others, thereby leveraging the genius of the collective MYD ‘crowd’. We’ll use the top questions in the forum, so please start submitting and voting up or down on existing ones now!)
Sadly, the Naked Cowboy didn’t meet our high invitation standards, and Mayor Bloomberg declined but thanked us for the invitation. To clarify, if you’re a registered Democrat, you’ll be deciding between Thompson and Avella in the September 15th Primary. Be sure to visit our voting toolkit if you need to verify or change your registration. To see what we’ve written about the mayoral race so far, go here.
Let’s Get Nekkid?! (Now With Video!)
“Less with more. If I can literally build a global brand with nothing but a pair of underwear, think what I can do for the city of New York with all of its resources and people.” — Naked Cowboy
Let’s Get Nekkid?!
Robert Burck, better known as New York’s Naked Cowboy, is running for New York City Mayor.
This is not a joke– it’s the naked truth. You hear that Bloomy??? Burck is said to be announcing his formal mayoral bid at the place where he’s become a feature– TIMES SQUARE– today. He’s made tons of money (reported to be $1,000/day) playing his guitar in solely his underwear, cowboy boots and cowboy hat and he is well-known internationally, as hordes of tourists come to Times Square to get their pictures taken with him.
Says the tighty-whitey troubador, “No one knows how to do more with less than yours truly, and that’s the kind of thinking I plan on sharing with my fellow New Yorkers when you elect me.” He promises new ideas on tax breaks, tourism, gay marriage, public transport and homeland security.
Beth is MYD’s Communications Director and was the mastermind behind getting the #nyequality campaign picked up by Perez Hilton, leading our advocacy website for marriage equality to get over 50,000 hits in a few days.
Come On By – Thompson

NYC Comptroller and Democratic Mayoral Candidate Bill Thompson wants you to stop by his office. Really. You. TONIGHT. You free?
In what he’s billing as “the biggest grassroots movement this City has ever seen,” Thompson has been struggling these past few months to get the spotlight away from the Bloomberg campaign. Though, polls clearly show Bloomberg in the lead, they also show that 3/4 of New Yorkers don’t know enough about the presumptive Democratic nominee. That might not paint the most ideal picture for Thompson, especially considering that Bloomberg has opted out of public financing and pledged to spend over $80 million of his own money in the general election, but those familiar with polling data will tell you that it also means that Thompson has nowhere to go but up.
So, if you’re one of those 3 out of 4 NYers who don’t know much about Bill Thompson, come on by his campaign office TONIGHT, Wednesday July 8th, anytime after 5pm @ 99 Madison Ave (29th St) on the 7th Floor.
PS – Note the blatant Obamaesque logo animation at the end.
