Rallying the Base
I just got back from a rally in Queens in support of Senator Malcolm Smith as Majority Leader. Of course, the guest of honor couldn’t make it, as he’s in Albany, taking care of business. But, it was an opportunity for those in his district to get vocal about what’s happened in the State Senate, what this coup means, and what can be done. Speakers included Reverend Floyd Flake, Councilman (and Comptroller Candidate) John Liu, Borough President Helen Marshall, Councilman Leroy Comrie, former Councilman Archie Spigner and other community leaders. It was interesting to see a community come together so quickly and fervently with support. Speakers cited how Senator Smith had been active and committed for decades – long before … More >>
Looks Like Outright War…?
Senate Majority Leader Malcolm A. Smith just issued a statement: “This was an illegal and unlawful attempt to gain control of the Senate and reverse the will of the people who voted for a Democratic Majority. Nothing has changed, Senator Malcolm A. Smith remains the duly elected Temporary President and Majority Leader. The real Senate Majority is anxious to get back to governing, and will take immediate steps to get us back to work.”
Breaking News: NYS Senate Changing Hands…? With More Links!
Breaking news: two State Senate Democrats, Monserrate and Espada, say they are caucusing with GOP caucus. Via Liz Benjamin: From the Press Release: “An historic change in leadership is taking place at this moment and a new bipartisan, coalition is being established that is bringing real reform to the Senate RIGHT NOW.” Several Senate sources say two Democrats – Hiram Monserrate and Pedro Espada Jr. – are poised to announce that they have decided to cross the aisle and caucus with the Republicans out of anger at Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith. Remember that the Senate Dems hold the chamber by the slimmest of margins–32-30–and it would only take two votes to flip it to GOP hands. Read more: NY … More >>
MTA Bailout Takes Shape In Albany
After months of indecision among lawmakers in Albany, an MTA bailout “framework” has been reached in the NYS Senate: Highlights: The tolls are still out. The 34-cent/$100 payroll tax, graduated so Dutchess, Putnam and Orange counties pay less (25 cents/$100), is in. The $1 taxi drop-off fee is back to 50 cents, with 25 percent of the revenue generated going to pay for debt service on MTA capital projects through 2011, but not for upstate and Long Island roads and bridges. Note the new plan will not generate enough money to fund the MTA’s capital needs, which the some folks have huge problems with.
MYD In The News: NYS Senate Majority Leader Cites MYD
This past weekend, Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith’s Office sent around an email promoting the new MYD website because of our post about the inefficiencies of the MTA: MYD is doing so much this year we’re actually attracting the attention of our state government’s leadership. Congratulations to our whole New Media Team for their commitment to keeping young people informed and engaged! While we’re patting ourselves on the back, I’d also like to point out that our Vice President, Ben Yee, is mentioned in the New York Observer in an article about his new boss, “Albany’s King Geek” Andrew Hoppin. Andrew Hoppin is on a mission to bring the NYS Senate into the 21st Century. His team’s mantra is “efficiency, … More >>
