NYS to Save Thousands of Jobs With The Passing of $26 Billion in Aid
After months of negotiating among lawmakers, Education Departments nation-wide will be receiving relief in the form of $10 billion in school funds recently made possible with the passage of a $26 billion dollar aid package during a special session of the House called yesterday by Speaker Pelosi. The objective is a combined effort to prevent 300,000 teacher and public sector layoffs with $16 billion reserved to help state governments bridge massive Healthcare/Medicaid expenses weighing heavily on their budgets. In order to keep the bill from increasing the deficit, offsets were made by closing existing corporate tax loopholes and agreeing to cuts in food stamp programs slated to go into effect 4 years from now. Well, health care reform passed! The House approved the reform last night with a vote of 219-212. If you’re not a C-SPAN or procedure fan like me you might be rather confused by the entire process. So lets go through it step by step. Every bill, as we all learned in grade school, has to be passed by both houses. On Christmas eve, the Senate passed a bill that was sent back to the House. Never mind his contradictory website, Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ)’s spokeswoman confirms he supports the Public Option because: “health insurance companies should have to compete for our business as individual consumers. Forcing them to compete, even through a public option would be better than an individual mandate…” and the best way to pay for those with pre-existing conditions is to “spread their costs among the healthy, among the taxpayers.” Article here.
