SUCCESS! Rep. Anthony Weiner and MYD, 4/7 event
More than 200 young, progressive New Yorkers gathered on Wednesday to celebrate the passage of the Health Care reform bill. Hosted by the Manhattan Young Democrats and co-sponsored by the Brooklyn Young Democrats, Queens County Young Democrats, Billionaires for Wealth Care, Moveon.org, ACT Now, the Young Invincibles, and Greater NYC for Change, the event was dedicated to thanking Congressman Weiner for his outstanding leadership over the last year. “This was not the bill I would have written,” said Weiner, “but it is … More >>

A Big F***ing Deal T-Shirt Story
So earlier this week during the signing ceremony for the most historic piece of progressive legislation since 1965, our very own (US) Vice President, Joe Biden – dropped an F bomb explaining how important the day, the bill, the moment – was. It was a half-hour later when I realized this had all happened and saw one of my friends tweet that it should be a T-Shirt. I must have muttered aloud well that’s not hard. Ten minutes later or so: This is a Big F***ing Deal (censored) Later I would create another edition with the official Obama signature and approval stamp on back, then a shirt with CHANGE WE BELIEVED IN and the signature/stamp. There’s even a coffee mug, … More >>
How Health Care Passed the House (And Now What?)
Well, health care reform passed! The House approved the reform last night with a vote of 219-212. If you’re not a C-SPAN or procedure fan like me you might be rather confused by the entire process. So lets go through it step by step. Every bill, as we all learned in grade school, has to be passed by both houses. On Christmas eve, the Senate passed a bill that was sent back to the House. At this point, two things could have happened. In the first case, the House and Senate could have met in something called conference, and then agreed to a new bill which would then be sent back to each house of Congress for a vote. However, … More >>
More Right Wing BS: Insurance, Risk, And Morality
A conservative friend of mine recently sent me this article. It made my blood boil. Nonetheless, hours before the historic health reform vote, it’s important to address. Because it’s a classic example of the oversimplified and often erroneous arguments making this bill – a bill that will cover 32 million and reduce the deficit by more than a trillion dollars over two decades- such a tough sell. My immediate instinct is go after this article for its moral repugnance. I can’t imagine, as a writer and, moreover, a human being, putting my name on a phrase like: patients have no more “right” to demand service than a gambler does at a sportsbook counter. The entire piece asserts a parallel between … More >>
