Living in 21st century, I suppose we all know that our eyes deceive us on a moment-by-moment basis. A twitter update turns out to be wrong. A false news report gets repeated for several hours. We go to war with a nation that has done nothing to us. We hear people telling us the Bush tax cuts or a lower corporate tax rate are vital to our economic future, though no evidence exists to support the theory. People say and do what they need to to for their desired goals. This is what our modern world is all about.

Sometimes, the reality isn’t so bright.

But here is Fox News, a news channel so cunning they even allude to it in their own name. They have been tremendously successful in creating false controversies and exploiting them for increasing ratings, for higher advertising dollars, for more profit. Nothing draws more eyes than controversy – the supermarket tabloids make a lot of money, and it’s not because of their quality, fair-and-balanced news coverage.

Monday evening, Jon Stewart did a massive hit-job on Fox News, clearly laying out the story of the mosque and the money trail. It might be too complicated for many Fox viewers to follow, but us kids know how to grasp these great complexities of our convoluted 21st century.

News Corp., which owns Fox News and the New York Post, gave $1 million to Haley Barbour’s Republican Governors Association this year, according to the RGA’s most recent filing.

The company’s media outlets play politics more openly than most, but the huge contribution to a party committee is a new step toward an open identification between Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. and the GOP. The company’s highest-ranking Democratic executive, Peter Chernin, recently departed.

Sure, kind of obvious, but as Politico points out, even for News Corp this is kind of a big step further in the direction of open partisanship. Meanwhile, Media Matters raises an interesting question: does this donation violate News Corp company policy?

From the News Corp Standards of Business Conduct:

No payment shall be made to, or for the benefit of, any public official in order to induce or entice such official to: enact, defeat or violate any law or regulation for the Company’s benefit; influence any official act; or obtain any favorable action by a governmental agency or official on behalf of the Company.

Sarah Palin will soon be a contributor on Fox News Channel, the New York Times reports.

The controversial former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate will not have a regular program of her own on Fox News, unlike 2008 GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. But she will appear as a contributor and “host an occasional series that will run on the network from time to time.”

According to the Times, Palin’s compensation was not disclosed. A formal announcement of the deal could come this afternoon.
