Real Reform?
The NY Post offers this update on the ethics bill Governor Cuomo wants passed before this year’s budget debate: An increasingly frustrated Gov. Cuomo plans to step up pressure on the scandal-scarred Legislature to pass a tough ethics bill if an agreement isn’t reached within two weeks, a Cuomo administration source told The Post yesterday. Cuomo, whose staff has been holding secret talks with aides to legislative leaders on the proposal, will turn up the heat by introducing his own ethics bill in the Legislature, which would force lawmakers to say if they support it or not. Now, remember that Cuomo has stated that this bill “is not going to be a situation where the people of the state will … More >>
In Rangel’s Defense
Cross-posted at WNYC’s It’s a Free Country. I began working for Charlie Rangel in his now-infamous rent-controlled campaign office in the summer of 2006 as an intern still in high school. I have continued to proudly work for him, as well as other Congressional members, ever since. I agree with District Attorney Robert Morgenthau, the greatest New York crime-buster of the 20th century, who said Rangel is being “railroaded” and that “he’s done more for the people of New York City than anybody else.” Having, even at my young age, an understanding of what transpires in Washington on a daily basis, I’d like to briefly illuminate the inordinate sanctimony and hypocrisy of the very institution that is now demonizing Rangel … More >>
Ethics Reform? Ethics Reform!
At 3:14 this morning, Gotham Gazzette’s David King wrote: There is talk around the capitol that an ethics agreement could be announced this week. It may be a long shot as most legislators have returned to their districts tonight but it is Albany and anything can happen. The official line as of this evening remained “talks are ongoing.” AND LO! The sun rose this morning on a new ethics deal being promoted by Republicans in the Assembly and Democrats in both houses: Senate Majority Conference Leader John Sampson, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb today announced the introduction of sweeping ethics and campaign finance reform legislation. The legislation will include provisions agreed to by both the … More >>
Young Getting It Done: The Bruno Gap
I live in Carroll Gardens, and I’m lucky enough to have Dan Squadron as my State Senator. A couple months ago, I bumped into him talking to constituents outside of the entrance to the Bergen Street subway stop on the F line. (He’s now put together a town hall with actual MTA reps for people who use the F — I should go and give them a piece of my mind…) MYD also honored him with a “Young Gets It Done” award at our party at the Griffin. He’s not even 30, but he arrived at the State Senate in 2008 and has been introducing legislation many of his fellow Senators have nightmares about. Exhibit A: Ethics overhaul, which is … More >>
Joe Bruno: Guilty As Charged
A jury has found former Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno guilty on two of eight counts of felony corruption charges, the DN’s Glenn Blain reports. Both of the counts are in connection with Bruno’s relationship with businessman Jared Abbruzzese. They are: Count 4: From March 2004 through November 2004 Bruno or his consulting firm received 11 payments from companies controlled by Jared E. Abbruzzese of Loudonville. Bruno allegedly did not perform legitimate work for the Abbruzzese companies, Communication Technology Advisors LLC and Capital & Technology Advisors LLC, and the payments were in effect gifts. And… Count 8: Bruno failed to disclose his participation through Mountain View Farm in a partnership with Abbruzzese involving thoroughbred race horses. The charge alleges Bruno … More >>
