NYC Says Frack No!
Hundreds of hydrofracking opponents packed the Tribeca Performing Arts Center on Wednesday night to speak out against the dangerous practice. As NY1 reports, the vast majority of those in attendance spoke against allowing hydrofracking in upstate New York.
The Manhattan Young Democrats have been vocal in our opposition to this practice for years. Click HERE to read the MYD Environmental Committee’s 2009 policy paper on the issue.

Frack No!
Tomorrow morning Frack Action is organizing a rally in Albany opposing hydrofracking, an extremely controversial gas drilling method. This rally comes on the heels of a DEC report which recommends hydrofracking in some parts of the state. You can RSVP or sign up for carpooling HERE.
And don’t forget to get involved with MYD’s Save Our Dough Campaign, which aims to protect our pizza and bagels from dangerous fracking chemicals.

TODAY — ACTION ALERT: Paterson Vetoes, New Yorkers Speak Out!
On Saturday Governor Paterson vetoed a bill that would temporarily ban hydrofracking in New York state. He instead issued an Executive Order which bans only horizontal fracturing, but still allows the also-dangerous vertical fracturing. In response, the group Frack Action is organizing a protest outside the Governor’s Manhattan office:

Fracking Moratorium Passes!
The New York State Assembly Monday night approved a resolution calling for a moratorium on hydrofracking in New York. The Senate had already approved the measure.
The bill, if signed into law by the governor, would place a hold on hydrofracking for natural gas or oil until May 15, 2011.
There is still much work to be done, but this is a good start.
Climate Rapid Response Team
Scientists have never been particularly good at communicating with the media— historically it’s not really been their job. Scientists are trained not to shape public opinion but to examine the natural world. But that may have to change the longer climate science remains in the crosshairs of the fact-free conservative punditocracy.
Enter the Climate Rapid Response Team, a group of 40 climate scientists who will spend their spare time fielding questions from the media about global warming. Polls… Read More
In Case You Missed It: Hydrofracking Moratorium Passed NYS Senate
Big news from last week on an issue MYD’s Environmental Committee did some public education on, and dealt with in one of their 2009 policy papers. From the NYT’s Green Blog:
“This is the first action in the country to put the brakes on this type of drilling to give New York the time we need to assess the risks if we’re going to move forward responsibly,” said Katherine Nadeau, a program director with Environmental Advocates of New York.
