There’s an Election Next Tuesday. For Reals!
Last fall we had town, city and county elections, and a congressional special upstate. We won the Congressional special (yay!), but Jon Corzine lost the NJ governorship to this guy, we lost ground in Nassau County, and Democratic county executive Andy Spano got whupped in Westchester. And then Massachusetts happened, and I’m still kind of shocked that a popular sitting Democratic attorney general in Massachusetts lost to this guy. Seriously, what happened? BUT! Musical Chairs: 2010 Preseason
In politics, pretty much every open-seat race, primary challenge, and retirement has a sort of trickle-down effect – when someone moves up (or tries to), others see opportunities to move into vacancies created by those seeking higher office. You could liken it to a whole lot of people trying to climb the same ladder, or maybe a game of musical chairs (in some cases, full-contact musical chairs!). When you’re talking about Democratic politics in NY, where most seats are categorized as “safe”, “safer”, or “safest”…the pressure surrounding a seat opening up can get intense. Consider This, NY: Universal Voter Registration
This seems so amazingly reasonable, I can’t imagine why we wouldn’t do it: Universal registration is one idea being batted around in a larger program of election reform bills at the NYS Senate. Let’s hope it goes somewhere! Btw, my two cents: let me vote (securely) online with a click of a button. The whole notion of having to be somewhere in person to do something is SO 20th century.
