County Party Update And Meeting
Months after the first County Committee meeting Manhattan Young Democrats is still in peoples’ minds. This Sunday we’re organizing a trip to the County Committee Executive Board meeting to show them we’re still ready to be active and helpful in growing the Democratic Party and Political Director Alex Voetsch got this response when doing the old phonebank: CC Member: Are you the insurgent group from the last meeting? Alex Voetsch: I guess you could call us that. CC Member: You guys are amazing, keep up the good work. Just to be clear, advocating for good governance is not insurgency and we’re excited to have elected members to the County Committee so that we can take part in democratic institutions of New … More >>
What’s Wrong With The Democratic Party in NY–And What You Can Do About It
Yesterday, I went to the rally being held at City Hall in support of a Democratic majority in the Senate. It wasn’t a rally. It was a press conference. A press conference with a handful of politicians, flanked by another dozen-or-so “third-party validators” who had hastily come together to “protest” the GOP coup. It was clear that this was a top-down orchestration. They weren’t tapping into the groundswell of grassroots anger about the coup. There were precious few non-political types there. Because democracy is only healthy when there are multiple valid options presented. Right now, the Republicans are so bereft of ideas that they aren’t able to participate in debate. Because if only the Democrats hold power, they will ultimately become as corrupt as the Republicans have been and as Democrats were or appeared to be in the 70s and 80s. Because at some point, the Republicans will be back in power. I’m concerned that date, in New York, may be as early … More >>
Wanted: Better NYS Democrats
As a relative newcomer to New York politics, I sometimes hear about the severe dysfunction up in Albany. I’ve always paid attention to government accountability issues at the federal level–but what about transparency and better governance right here in New York state? As The Albany Project makes clear, electing Democrats is simply not enough: I hate the secrecy. I hate not knowing who voted for what in which committee and where that bill went and what the debate on the floor was and more importantly what the debate in the back room was. There is no excuse – NONE – for the New York State government to do ANYTHING in secret. They’re not holding state secrets. They’re not in charge … More >>
