Republicans Hide Behind Budget Woes To Avoid Moving On Redistricting Reform In Albany.
Despite a pledge to New Yorkers throughout the state to pursue comprehensive reform aimed at stripping the politics out of redrawing election districts, State Republicans have dug in and refused to debate any one of the bills that have been submitted by lawmakers to address this issue. I mean take your pick: Senator Gianaris, Assemblyman Jefferries and even Governor Cuomo all have presented bills to make the process more transparent and bi-partisan but Senate Majority Speaker Dean Skelos has time and again avoided the issue citing concern over the growing budget deficit as the main focus for his conference and that undertaking any other legislation could be harmful to getting our books in order. For all their talk about limiting spending, NY Senate Republicans don’t seem too concerned about money these days: Incumbent GOPers, who’ve boasted of belt-tightening since taking over the Senate in January, have hired 27 new staffers – at a cost of $1 million to taxpayers. Republicans have also handed out more than $284,600 in raises to existing employees since the start of the year, Senate payroll records show. We’re wrapping up week three of the New York State Senate gridlock. And all I can say is: TFGIF. Despite suggestions earlier today that a power-sharing deal was in the offing, Senator Espada, flanked by Senator Skelos, emerged from talks early afternoon to tell reporters the following: “We don’t have an agreement, but we’ve certainly made commitments to work through the weekend,” Espada told reporters. “Sen.
