Experts And Council Members Debate The Living Wage Bill

In was an on again, off again light rain that fell as we all stood on line to get into yesterday’s city council meeting on the living wage bill.  Movement slowed to a snail’s pace when the space for visitors inside the chamber filled up long before the meeting even began. Though despite the wait and the weather, neither factors greatly deterred the overwhelming majority of those who came in support of the Fair Wages for New Yorkers Act from waiting out for an opportunity to go inside. While standing on that line you could sense that there was a lively and confident mood among supporters, probably still resonating from the amazing rally the night before at Riverside Church where … More >>

Larry Seabrook’s $177 Bagel

The New York Times ran a tongue-in-cheek story today about whether you could spend $177 at Bits Bites & Baguettes, as Councilman Larry Seabrook apparently did. It would be difficult to order a nearly $200 bagel sandwich at Bits Bites & Baguettes — difficult, but certainly not impossible. You would have to get creative. The bagel would have to get messy. “Anything can go on a bagel,” a manager said on Wednesday from behind the counter on Park Place, a short walk from City Hall. “We can put the whole menu on a bagel.” In the same vein, the New York Post had a chef whip up such a bagel: This is the restaurant capital of the world, and our … More >>

The Results Are In… Mostly

Though the 2009 Democratic Primary was a huge deal in NYC, you might be a little hard pressed to actually see the results, so MYD is again coming to the aid. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the office, the winners, the losers, and an assessment of what it all means. Two of the Citywide races will have a runoff, scheduled for September 29tha. So, we’ll have to do this again in 2 weeks. Election results are preliminary and subject to change by the Board of Elections. Youngest City Council Candidate Ever: Dodge Landesman

Senior Slide could have an altered meaning in 2010 if Dodge Landesman, currently a high school junior, wins his bid for a City Council Seat. Landesman is the youngest candidate ever to run for City Council. How is this possible? Well, the state (and city) Board of Elections allows citizens 18 and over to run for the post. You can run for State Assembly and State Senator too. These age requirements presumably were put in place when people died at age 25 (I put in a call to the state Board of Elections to verify; will update if they reply). Landesman is running against Rosie Mendez, who took office in January 2006. She represents Manhattan’s Second District (Lower East Side, … More >>
