Experts And Council Members Debate The Living Wage Bill

In was an on again, off again light rain that fell as we all stood on line to get into yesterday’s city council meeting on the living wage bill.  Movement slowed to a snail’s pace when the space for visitors inside the chamber filled up long before the meeting even began. Though despite the wait and the weather, neither factors greatly deterred the overwhelming majority of those who came in support of the Fair Wages for New Yorkers Act from waiting out for an opportunity to go inside. While standing on that line you could sense that there was a lively and confident mood among supporters, probably still resonating from the amazing rally the night before at Riverside Church where … More >>

The Other Big News Story from Friday

In all the excitement over the State Senate’s passage of Marriage Equality on Friday, it was easy to miss another big story: the City budget deal.  The deal reached by Mayor Bloomberg, the NYC City Council and various unions means that over 4000 teachers will keep their jobs and 20 firehouses will remain open. The union boss agreed to suspend study sabbaticals for a year to save his members’ jobs. The deal also allows the city to use teachers who lack a permanent job as day-to-day substitutes. Those teachers, whom the city is required to keep on the payroll, would be forced to take all daily assignments in their local districts, saving the city tens of millions of dollars in … More >>

Show Me The Paperwork, Ms. Black

When Joel Klein, former Justice Department antitrust chief and media company executive, was picked as Mayor Bloomberg’s choice for chancellor in 2002, his application was quickly submitted so that in three days state officials could convene the necessary review panel to approve a waiver giving Klein power over the nation’s largest school system and begin 8 years of drastic changes to how education is taught in this city. Surprisingly no such waiver has yet to be submitted for Cathie Black as of the time this piece was written. And while it may seem premature to assume this already could be second thoughts on the part of an administration that just announced Ms. Black to the country as the successor of a $23 … More >>

Bloomberg Focuses On Changing The Tenure Rules For Teachers

While taking part of an education series being aired this week on NBC’s Today Show, Mayor Bloomberg proposed a new set of rules for teacher tenure, previously a status designated to teachers after 3 years of service without many exceptions. His aim is to alter what he claims is a culture of ” automatic tenure” for teachers regardless of ability or professional mastery. Mayor Bloomberg went on to say: “Beginning this year, our policy will be very simple. Only teachers who help students and schools move ahead significantly for at least two consecutive years will earn tenure. And just as we are raising the bar for our students through higher standards, we must also raise the bar for our teachers … More >>

Mayor Bloomberg: Arizona Is Hurting America

Today Mayor Bloomberg published an Op-Ed in the Daily News slamming the Arizona law as potentially unconstitutional and undeniably against the culture that makes America great. Enjoy. Bloomberg: Four Day A Week Mayor

The Times ran a story yesterday about Bloomberg’s lavish twice monthly visits to Bermuda. Although Bloomberg is a giant philanthropist, there does to be something impolitic about going to one’s $10 million waterfront estate “about twice a month” when 22 percent of New Yorkers are classified as poor and 10 percent are unemployed. Even more important than whether the Mayor can empathize with so many poor and unemployed in the city while jumping on his private jet to abscond for the weekend, is how it affects his duties directly: New York City mayors have historically prided themselves on working seven days a week and racing to the scene of an emergency even on the weekends. Mr. Bloomberg does not. His … More >>
