NYSYD President Running for Assembly
The following is a message from the current New York State Young Democrats President, Matt Silverstein who is running for Assembly in Queens. You can meet Matt tonight at his Campaign Kick-off Event, details below! Tonight, I officially launch my campaign to be the next New York State Assembly Member from the 26th Assembly District. I decided to seek this seat after our current Assembly Member, Ann Margaret Carrozza (D), announced that after 14 years in office she was going to retire and focus on her law practice and Bar Association activities rather than run for re-election. By seeking this seat, I have also decided not to seek re-election as President of the New York State Young Democrats. I would … More >>
Democratic Party In Manhattan
Party politics is complicated and people throw terms around like state committeeman, district leader, party club, and county committee and almost no one knows what they all mean. Over the last week or so, I’ve been working to decode the tea leaves and come to grips with all the various layers of the Democratic Party here in the city and the state. Districts The start of the confusion is that there are many different “districts” that every voter belongs to. Lets go through the types of districts that are important to Democratic party structure from biggest to smallest, starting with the Assembly District. As a disclaimer, I am only sure of this structure in Manhattan. The state committee is the … More >>
Holy #%@&, What Happened Yesterday?!
Yesterday was one frakking eventful day in NY politics. Let’s review: Good News: The NYS Senate voted overwhelmingly to tell Hiram Monserrate to take a hike. "I feel a lot better about us as an institution right now, that we finally did something that was correct. It was a step forward," said Albany Senator Neil Breslin. Word. For those who have blocked out this one and/or weren’t following the story, Monserrate is part of the “thug and thief” tag-team that started the state senate coup last summer. He was convicted of misdemeanor domestic assault charges recently but acquitted of felony charges, prompting many to demand that the senate Fire Monserrate. While Monserrate will go to court to overturn the senate’s … More >>
There’s an Election Next Tuesday. For Reals!
Last fall we had town, city and county elections, and a congressional special upstate. We won the Congressional special (yay!), but Jon Corzine lost the NJ governorship to this guy, we lost ground in Nassau County, and Democratic county executive Andy Spano got whupped in Westchester. And then Massachusetts happened, and I’m still kind of shocked that a popular sitting Democratic attorney general in Massachusetts lost to this guy. Seriously, what happened? BUT! We can turn over a new page next Tuesday, when voters in LI, Queens, and Westchester will be electing four new assemblymembers: Queens (AD24) – Weprins! Former Assemblyman Mark Weprin moved over to the City Council, so his brother David, who was on the council and ran … More >>
Ethics Reform? Ethics Reform!
At 3:14 this morning, Gotham Gazzette’s David King wrote: There is talk around the capitol that an ethics agreement could be announced this week. It may be a long shot as most legislators have returned to their districts tonight but it is Albany and anything can happen. The official line as of this evening remained “talks are ongoing.” AND LO! The sun rose this morning on a new ethics deal being promoted by Republicans in the Assembly and Democrats in both houses: Senate Majority Conference Leader John Sampson, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb today announced the introduction of sweeping ethics and campaign finance reform legislation. The legislation will include provisions agreed to by both the … More >>
It’s Official: Leg Session In Albany Next Week
It’s official. The Legislature will be returning to Albany for a special session at noon next Tuesday. Gov. David Paterson issued a proclamation this afternoon calling lawmakers back to the Capitol. On the agenda – or rather, on HIS agenda, since the legislators are not legally required to address anything they don’t want to – are: Paterson’s $5.2 billion two-year deficit reduction plan, gay marriage and the spending cap/circuit breaker proposal. You know what that means, folks: get your butts to New York Equality and start those phones ringing in Albany. Liz Benjamin – Daily News
