Cuomo’s Shadow Governor-ing
NY Magazine’s Intelligencer calls Cuomo “the shadowy fourth man in the Albany room,” a play on the old adage that New York is run by three men in a room (Governor, Senate President, Speaker of the Assembly): Publicly, Cuomo has supported Paterson’s positions at key moments while not appearing to meddle. When the Legislature tried to replace school-aid cuts with tax increases, Cuomo spoke out forcefully on Paterson’s behalf at a press conference. Behind the scenes, Cuomo has been even more active. “Andrew’s mark is all over this budget,” a Democratic insider says. “He began a dialogue with Paterson about a month ago, and they’ve been having nearly daily conversations and Andrew talks a ton to Larry Schwartz,” Paterson’s chief … More >>
Andrew Cuomo Announces Run For Governor
Andrew Cuomo released a short video this morning announcing that he will run for Governor of New York. He also released a longer video, 21 min, which I embedded below. In that video he outlines a wide range of his policy positions. The NYTimes also has a great interactive feature called Perspectives on Andrew M. Cuomo, “where former colleagues, mentors and campaign challengers” speak about Cuomo’s “leadership style, accomplishments and temperament.” I also recently received a blast email from his campaign: Sadly, our state government has failed our people. It has been paralyzed all too often by partisan politics and corruption. We must change all that. It’s time to overhaul our government — clean it up, pare it down and … More >>
Espada Abuses Threaten The Future Of Soundview Health Center
State Senator Pedro Espada Jr and 18 members of the Comprehensive Community Development Corporation in Soundview, Bronx have been accused by the Attorney General of misdirecting $14 million in tax payers funds into the hands of family and friends. In addition, the Majority leader used the grants to pick up tabs for restaurants, vacations and even pay steep campaign expenses. The Senator defends his innocence arguing that the CCDC is being targeted as a political lighting rod for Andrew Cuomo’s corruption campaign. While Espada may claim that federal audits can be accepted as seals of fiscal integrity, reason is stretched when a not-for-profit would rack up sushi bills of $20,000 while funding is being cut for health awareness events, extending mobile offices or … More >>
Cuomo: Don’t Vote for Pedro
According to the Daily News, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo “has found ‘extensive evidence’ of illegal and improper actions by embattled Sen. Pedro Espada Jr. and the companies he controls,” DN Albany Bureau Chief Ken Lovett reports. As it turns out, Cuomo has been investigating Espada and his various companies for nearly 9 months (that’s before the June Senate coup). You see, in addition to being a State Senator, Pedro Espada is also President and CEO of both Soundview Healthcare Network and Soundview Management Services (which provides janitorial services for Soundview Healthcare). Cuomo has subpoenaed Espada’s Senate records and his companies for months, but he has yet to comply. In his defence, non-disclosure is something of an art form for Espada … More >>
Musical Chairs: 2010 Preseason
In politics, pretty much every open-seat race, primary challenge, and retirement has a sort of trickle-down effect – when someone moves up (or tries to), others see opportunities to move into vacancies created by those seeking higher office. You could liken it to a whole lot of people trying to climb the same ladder, or maybe a game of musical chairs (in some cases, full-contact musical chairs!). When you’re talking about Democratic politics in NY, where most seats are categorized as “safe”, “safer”, or “safest”…the pressure surrounding a seat opening up can get intense. As about eleventy million people consider running for Attorney General in 2010 – assuming, for the moment, that sitting AG Andrew Cuomo does run for governor … More >>
Crusading New Yorkers
Some cheery news from beyond New York State borders! The Supreme Court has ruled 5-4 that state attorney generals have the right to investigate nationally-chartered banks for violating consumer protection laws. NY AG Andrew Cuomo wanted to see if national banks were engaging in discriminatory practices by funnelling minorities into dangerous sub-prime loans. Fannie Mae estimates that more than half of sub-prime borrowers qualified for prime loans; many were minorities suffering under redlining practices. The map…shows the distribution of foreclosures in New York City; foreclosures are most dense where minorities are concentrated, in large part because of these practices. But when Cuomo tried to look into the problems, the banks told him that their national regulator preempted any state … More >>
