New York, too

Unfortunately like most other states in the country, a bill has been introduced in New York by Assemblyman Steven Katz to ban Planned Parenthood — and other organizations that provide abortions — from receiving any state money. This wouldn’t just affect organizations like Planned Parenthood (never mind the fact that only 3% of their work involves abortions), but hospitals, clinics and community health centers that perform abortions.

According to Crain’s, Richard Gottfried, chair of the Assembly Health Committee, publicly blasted the bill:

“A bill like this doesn’t belong in New York,” Mr. Gottfried said in a statement. “I will do everything I can to stop it cold and to protect the right to access to health care, including abortion.”  It would “be tempting to laugh it off as an extremist political stunt, but these days you can’t count on anything being too extreme to be taken seriously.”

The bill has been referred to the Assembly Health Committee, and is set to come up for a vote in the coming weeks. Voice your opposition to the bill here!
