On Monday, MYD is teaming up with Environmental Advocates of NY and concerned imbibers for “Save Our Beer,” a spring social at the Brooklyn Brewery to highlight the potential threat fracking poses to our pristine water supply –and therefore, our local beer supply.

So ford the East River by ferry or “L” and have a pint or two in support of the cause. The beer you save could be your own.

So imagine our delight to read this headline in today’s Politicker:

Stringer Adds Youngsters To Community Board

Earlier this year, Manhattan BP Scott Stringer announced a plan to infuse the stodgy community boards with new members in their 20?s and 30?s, and today he announced that half of the 82 new members of the community board fit that demographic.

Not only are there more young people on the Manhattan Community Boards than ever before, but we are proud to say that several MYD members were included in that list, including our Secretary, Cory Evans.

But one of those people was MYD member Juan Carlos who stopped by to hear NY Sierra Club president Dan Miner speak about something called “white roofs.”  Intrigued by the concept, he approached the Environmental Committee about creating a website to identify black roofs in Manhattan and paint them white.  With that, White Roof Project was born.

We decided that our first painting project should be for a non-profit, and the very first organization we reached out to  – Bowery Mission – accepted our offer.  In a period of about 3 weeks we went from never having heard the phrase “white roofs” to agreeing to paint 10,000 square feet of roof for one of New York City’s oldest charities!

Today White Roof Project is its own non-profit organization, and while it is no longer officially associated with MYD, we will always consider it our baby!

White Roof Project might be our most well-known success story, but all of our committees have produced terrific events.  A tri-boro bike safety ride, a state budget trivia night, a panel discussion on immigration…the list goes on.

Women’s news has been scary lately. But to do great things we need a great team, and that’s where you come in.  Every year the Officers appoint Directors who sit on the executive board and help run various aspects of the group.  You can download the Director position descriptions and application HERE.

Please note: we may not fill all of the positions right away, since we’re still in the process of developing our plans for 2012, but we encourage you to apply to any position you might be interested in.  We will be making appointments by the end of the month.

Elections will take place on January 17th at 7PM. The location will be RWDSU – 30 East 29th St., 5th Floor Conference Room. Make sure to pay your dues online in advance or bring a $20 bill — you must be a 2012 member to vote.

Officer positions are President, Executive Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer (learn exactly what the requirements are in Article III of the MYD Constitution, HERE). These positions are elected at the first meeting of the year by dues paying members, our meeting will be held Tuesday, January 17 at 7pm – we are currently working on securing a location so watch out for deets in the newsletter!

To run for these positions you must have attended at least one MYD event in 2011 and be a dues paying member for 2012.
