Support for Obama Among His Base Remains Strong
There are two interesting articles out today that point to a positive trend for President Obama’s reelection campaign. First, the Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza reports that the President’s support among his base remains as stong as any recent President seeking reelection. Although African Americans remain the base group most broadly supportive of Obama, liberals and Democrats are very much in his camp as well. In Gallup’s most recent data, Obama’s job approval rating stood at 78 percent among Democrats and 70 percent among liberals. In addition to his strong support among African Americans, Benjy Sarlin reports that the President is also polling well among Hispanics: An extensive survey of Latino voters by Univision this week showed Obama racking up similarly high margins … More >>
Why You Need To Be At The Living Wage Rally Tonight
Many Voices, One Goal: Supporting a Living Wage in NYC When: Tonight November 21st Where: Riverside Church (490 Riverside Drive – take the 1 train to 125th Street) Time: Doors open at 5:30pm, Program starts at 6pm Contact: Ahmed – vp@gomyd.com In 2008-2009, when the downturn began to show how truly in trouble we were, our elected officials decided on a course of action that infused our economy with tax-payer money to prop up the financial market, stem the collapse of the auto industry (and thousands of its connected vendors) and pay to keep teachers behind desks and police officers on the street. Personally I supported these stimulus measures because I understood this was a necessary investment by the federal … More >>
Bike Share Will Redefine New York
New York is on the cusp of a new form of transportation called “bike share.” This has the potential to redefine the typical way of moving around the city from the crowded underground subway to the care-free bike on the street. MYD went to Manhattan Community Board 8 last Wednesday to hear about the new system from Jon Orcutt, the Policy Director for the City’s Department of Transportation. We expected to have to defend the system but Mr. Orcutt did such a good job of selling it that the bike-hostile Upper East Side community board actually responded to the plan warmly. The system will have 10,000 bikes at 600 kiosks around the city from 79th Street in Manhattan all the … More >>
The Story of Broke
COMING NOVEMBER 8th, 2011: The Story of Broke The United States isn’t broke; we’re the richest country on the planet and a country in which the richest among us are doing exceptionally well. But the truth is, our economy is broken, producing more pollution, greenhouse gasses and garbage than any other country. In these and so many other ways, it just isn’t working. But rather than invest in something better, we continue to keep this ‘dinosaur economy’ on life support with hundreds of billions of dollars of our tax money. The Story of Broke calls for a shift in government spending toward investments in clean, green solutions—renewable energy, safer chemicals and materials, zero waste and more—that can deliver jobs AND … More >>
The “Let Women Die” Bill
Republicans in Congress can’t find time to create a single job, but they certainly have time to put women’s lives at risk. Under H.R. 358, dubbed the “Protect Life Act” and sponsored by Rep. Joe Pitts (R-Pa.), hospitals that don’t want to provide abortions could refuse to do so, even for a pregnant woman with a life-threatening complication that requires a doctor terminate her pregnancy. Oh, but it doesn’t end there. In addition to changing the rules for hospitals, H.R. 358 would deny federal funding to any health care plan that includes abortion coverage, something that might cause insurance providers to stop covering abortions. This bill will never be signed into law. It is nothing more political posturing; red meat … More >>
Success on the East River Greenway!
Last Wednesday, Mayor Bloomberg and a broad coalition of City and State elected officials announced that they had reached an agreement with the United Nations to fund the completion of the East River Greenway. As Senator Krueger, Assemblymember Kavanagh and Council Member Garodnick mentioned their joint press release, “this agreement has the potential to transform our community’s waterfront and parkland.” This is a great victory for the MYD Transportation Committee! We have been campaigning for this project for the past few months. The agreement is both realistic in accommodating the needs of the UN and visionary for planning a reliable funding source to fill the gap in the East River Greenway. Many articles and press releases in the past week … More >>
