Romney’s “Small Donors”
Last week, Mitt Romney’s campaign sent out a press release announcing, among other things, that “84% Of All Donations Received Through The End Of March Were $250 Or Less.” Could it be that Romney is experiencing a groundswell of grassroots support from small donors around he country? Turns out, not so much: What the “84%” figure really means is that roughly 8 out of 10 checks received by the Romney campaign were $250 or less, not that 84% of the campaign’s total fundraising came from checks of that size. The press release says these donations have totaled $11.6, or 13% of the nearly $87M the campaign has raised so far. I’m no expert, but this seems like it goes way beyond just massaging … More >>
Ezra Klein on the Real Big ****ing Deal in the American Healthcare Act
Everybody’s talking about the individual mandate and health care exchanges – but Ezra Klein on Wonkblog outlines the other huge change that could dramatically improve healthcare in the US: The Affordable Care Act is mostly known for its mandate to expand health insurance to 30 million more Americans within a decade. That’s the side of the legislation Democrats touted last week, when the law hit its two-year anniversary. It’s also the point that has roused the most ire from opponents. Insurance expansion is at the heart of legal challenges the Supreme Court will take up on Monday, which argue that forcing people to buy insurance coverage is unconstitutional. But much of the law’s 905 pages are dedicated to an effort that’s arguably … More >>
Super Tuesday Viewing Party with New American Tavern
On Tuesday night, MYD joined many politically minded folks for a multi-partisan Super Tuesday watch party hosted by the New American Tavern at the Village Pourhouse. The New American Tavern is a movement designed to reintegrate political discussion, learning and civic engagement into the social and cultural fabric of American life. With the GOP primaries at center stage, innovative ideas such as the Speakers Corner to encourage dialogue, 2 for 1 drink specials and a special cocktail called the “Pork Barrel”, they are well on their way to redefining what a Public House can be. Along with the many groups in attendance, and the friends they brought with them, it was great to meet so many people new to New York City … More >>
Veto These Maps!
Back in January the Manhattan Young Democrats joined with other Young Dem groups in the region to denounce the proposed redistricting maps and urge Governor Cuomo to veto the lines. We applaud Governor Cuomo for stating publicly he will veto these proposed district lines, and it is our hope that he will keep to this promise for the good of New York State. We as Young Democrats will not stand idly by during this debate. We will continue to fight for an independent redistricting commission that will ensure fair and representative voting for all New Yorkers, regardless of party affiliation Now the editorial pages of two major New York papers have also come out in support of a veto. New … More >>
Pelosi Supports Marriage Equality!
As gay rights groups push to have marriage equality included in the 2012 Democratic Party platform, they are getting support from a prominent figure: House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. According to her spokesperson, Pelosi supports the language put forth by Freedom to Marry, which reads as follows: We support the full inclusion of all families in the life of our nation, with equal respect, responsibilities, and protections under the law, including the freedom to marry. Government has no business putting barriers in the path of people seeking to care for their family members, particularly in challenging economic times. We support the Respect for Marriage Act and the overturning of the federal so-called Defense of Marriage Act, and oppose discriminatory constitutional … More >>
