In the upcoming week, the New York State Legislature will decide the fate of the Women’s Equality Act (officially known as “Governor’s Program Bill #9”). Opponents are zeroing in on the Reproductive Rights element of the bill, deeming it “an abortion expansion.” In reality the Women’s Equality Act simply brings New York State Abortion law into line with the language in Roe v. Wade (New York State decriminalized abortion in 1970, 3 years before Roe).
In essence, the Reproductive Rights element of the WEA simply eliminates legal shades of grey between federal and state laws however in rallying against the WEA due to its abortion language, opponents are threatening to sink protections for women that stretch far beyond reproductive rights.
We cannot stand down. LEAN FORWARD – We cannot let New York State stagnate as much of the country struggles to avoid moving backward.
The next week is full of Actions to lean in to Albany and pressure them to bring the bill to the Senate floor for a vote and get this done!
