Whoops: Real Cuomo Website Linked to Fake Cuomo Twitter
You had to figure something like this would eventually happen. Gannett’s Nick Reisman has the story: Unfortunately for the real Cuomo twitter feed (@NYGovCuomo) which went live Saturday, the official state website for the governor links to the fake twitter account. NYCTheBlog is on the tweetgate case, but it remains unclear how the fake account was linked to by real website. Still, it’s very easy to confuse the two at first glance. Both accounts use the same picture of Cuomo and have the same background. Cuomo spokesman Josh Vlasto said he was aware of the problem and it was being fixed. Just after 12:30, the link appeared to have been fixed. To be clear: @NYGovernor is a parody. @NYGovCuomo is real. … More >>
David Answers Goliath on Education Reform
In a Jonathan Alter Newsweek article on Bill Gates’ involvement in education reform efforts, Gates lists some questions he’d want to ask the woman Alter describes as his “chief adversary” in the education reform debate, Diane Ravitch. As WaPo education columnist Valerie Straus puts it: It’s the world’s richest (or second richest) man vs. an education historian and New York University research professor. In her column, Straus gave Ravitch an opportunity to answer those questions. It’s a good opportunity to hear responses from the side of the education reform argument that (so far) has had a much smaller megaphone. Here’s one interesting passage: Gates: “Does she think all those ‘dropout factories’ are lonely?” Ravitch: “This may come as a surprise to … More >>
MYD Holiday Party. Be There or Be Square. Tonight!
That’s right folks. It’s December, which means that it’s time for chestnuts roasting over an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose, and the most kickass holiday party MYD has thrown in recent memory, complete with a four-hour open bar. The fact is it’s been a hard year for Democrats, but in the face of that adversity MYD still had an awesome year. We headed out to Queens and Rockland County and helped turn two red state senate seats blue. We rallied with other Young Dems and Bronx community activists outside Pedro Espada’s house (his real house, in Westchester). We threw great events, we helped win elections, and we proved (again) that Young Gets It Done. So come celebrate with us! … More >>
HAPPENING NOW: A Real* Filibuster
No anonymous hold. No kabuki dance. No threats. Just Bernie Sanders, standing on the floor of the Senate for five hours already and still going strong, talking about job creation, tax policy, and why he thinks the Obama compromise plan is wrong. Watch it here on CSPAN. *I’ve edited the title to include the asterisk because Sanders is holding a “mock” filibuster, because the bill he would be blocking isn’t actually under consideration at the moment. But he’s still holding up the Senate and talking non-stop to make the statement…and probably to show he’s ready to do it again for real if he has to.
Reversal: “If It’s Take It or Leave It, We’ll Leave It”
That’s what Texas Democratic Rep. Lloyd Doggett said after the House Dems voted overwhelmingly in an internal meeting to reject the compromise proposal extending the Bush tax cuts that the President has put forward. More from NPR: The vote derailed what had seemed to be a grudging Democratic movement toward the tax package, and it wasn’t clear how much the deal would need to change for lawmakers to accept it. Asked what happens next, James Clyburn of South Carolina, the No. 3 person in the Democratic leadership, said, “I don’t know. We’ll wait and see.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said talks between Democrats and the White House would continue “in the days ahead” before the tax-cut legislation is considered again. … More >>
