Senior Slide could have an altered meaning in 2010 if Dodge Landesman, currently a high school junior, wins his bid for a City Council Seat. Landesman is the youngest candidate ever to run for City Council. How is this possible? Well, the state (and city) Board of Elections allows citizens 18 and over to run for the post. You can run for State Assembly and State Senator too. These age requirements presumably were put in place when people died at age 25 (I put in a call to the state Board of Elections to verify; will update if they reply). Landesman is running against Rosie Mendez, who took office in January 2006. She represents Manhattan’s Second District (Lower East Side, … More >>

Politics 101: Community Boards

As part of a revision of the City Charter, New York City Community Boards were officially established in 1975, but they’ve existed in some form since 1951. Currently there are 59 Boards across the five boroughs. Each one represents a Community District of no more than 250,000 people.
