Bike Share Will Redefine New York
New York is on the cusp of a new form of transportation called “bike share.” This has the potential to redefine the typical way of moving around the city from the crowded underground subway to the care-free bike on the street. MYD went to Manhattan Community Board 8 last Wednesday to hear about the new system from Jon Orcutt, the Policy Director for the City’s Department of Transportation. We expected to have to defend the system but Mr. Orcutt did such a good job of selling it that the bike-hostile Upper East Side community board actually responded to the plan warmly. Success on the East River Greenway!
Last Wednesday, Mayor Bloomberg and a broad coalition of City and State elected officials announced that they had reached an agreement with the United Nations to fund the completion of the East River Greenway. As Senator Krueger, Assemblymember Kavanagh and Council Member Garodnick mentioned their joint press release, “this agreement has the potential to transform our community’s waterfront and parkland.” This is a great victory for the MYD Transportation Committee! We have been campaigning for this project for the past few months. Safer Streets Mean a Healthier New York
There has been a lot of unwarranted and over-the-top opposition to New York City’s bike lane network this year. Amid all of the this noise, it is easy to lose sight of the facts that cycling is becoming more popular, it gets safer as more people do it, and many people are actually becoming healthier by incorporating biking into their daily lives. Dr. Linda Prine and 139 other doctors recently wrote a letter to Mayor Bloomberg on Sept. 22, 2011, explaining “pedestrian plazas, car-free spaces, neighborhood bike networks and world-class bicycle lanes… are vital to the public health of our city.” Dr. Prine would know as the President of the New York County chapter of the Academy of Family Physicians. … More >>
