Photo-ish of the Week: El Barrio

It’s more painting than photography this week, but it’s so beautiful (and depicts a 1920s view of New York’s 14th street), that we couldn’t resist. The painting is part of Nexus New York: Latin/American Artists in the Modern Metropolis on view at El Museo del Barrio in East Harlem. El Museo hosted the New York City election’s first mayoral showdown Tuesday night, and also celebrates its 40th anniversary/reopening since renovation this Saturday. Photo of the Week: Hora Trumps Hate

From last weekend’s counter-protest against Westboro Baptist Church, a severely disillusioned group that traveled all the way from Wichita, Kansas to spread their hate for gays, Jews and President Obama at Brooklyn synagogues. But the people fought back, they did, by singing, dancing and holding signs like the one above. (Great coverage of the event by everyone’s favorite Brooklyn blog, FIPS.) A perfect reminder of why support of next weekend’s National Equality March in D.C. is so very necessary. Photo courtesy of Erica, FIPS

Photo of the Week: Back-up Plan

The Empire State Building unveiled its new $12.5 million Art Deco lobby this week, designed by architect Frank Prial. We had originally planned to feature the Building’s display of green Thursday night, for the 70th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz (and much to the delight of Iranian activists opposing Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s visit to our fair city this week). However, the powers that be at ESB lost their nerve, and last night’s color was decidedly red. (Photo by Katie Sokoler/Gothamist)

Photo of the Week: Remembering Wounds

Cpl Tyson Johnson III was wounded in a mortar attack on Abu Ghraib prison. The image is from photojournalist Nina Berman’s book, Purple Hearts: Back from Iraq, released in 2004. With portraits of many young Iraq war veterans, Purple Hearts is a great reminder of our appreciation to them on this anniversary of 9/11. As part of our thanks, MYD members are asking for donations for TRACK, an initiative of the Wounded Warrior Project. TRACK assists wounded veterans of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan by offering scholarships, books, supplies, and a laptop, so they can go back to school in a supportive group environment.  The program also offers internships for young vets. Photo Of The Week: (Sip It Through A) Straw Poll

Put 100 MYD’s on a rooftop with some margaritas on a beautiful end-of-summer evening and what do you get? A Straw Poll. NYC Council member Dan Garodnick even came out to inform voters and members. (See the results and view more photos from the event)
