A message from our friends at the Staten Island Young Democrats. (This an interesting read about a group that doesn’t visit us very frequently here in Manhattan – the Tea Party!) Please join SIYD if can. For almost 50 years, Staten Island has celebrated Irish heritage with its annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. While many look forward to the Irish step dancing, myriad of marching basset hounds and even the “Forest Avenue” scene of bars, this year will bring something different to the table. Forget “The Irish are coming!” The Tea Partiers are coming. And they’re coming with their propaganda, false claims and faulty ideals. Recently, the last few parade days evoked a feeling of solidarity with elected officials and … More >>
Don’t let the new anti-choice Congress take away our reproductive health care! This is an issue that affects all of us as young people who often take the right to family planning for granted. Organizations such as Planned Parenthood – who are already banned from using government money to provide abortions – are falling victim to inflammatory pro-life rhetoric. No matter how you feel about the issue of choice, it is true that organizations such as Planned Parenthood provide basic women’s health services to many of our community members who have no other access to health care. In the past months, reproductive health groups like Planned Parenthood and NARAL have been abuzz about a new threat at crisis pregnancy centers – originally designed to provide pregnant women with bias free knowledge about all of their options including abortion – the threat of dishonest and incomplete information. With a new anti-choice Congress, reproductive health groups are worried about cuts to women’s health services including funding for birth control and the potential disqualification of women’s health centers which provide abortion from Federal funding streams. As part of this anti-choice climate, reproductive health advocates note the concomitant rise in the provision of anti-abortion information by crisis pregnancy centers. Though women believe they are being given honest medical information, they are … More >>
Holiday caroling for a purpose with Marriage Equality USA. One of my favorites (to the tune of White Christmas): I’m dreaming of equal justice. Just like the Constitution says! Where we all pay taxes and all have access to civil marriage licenses. I’m dreaming of equal justice, when true equality is in sight. May your days be merry and bright and may all have equal marriage rights! Also good (to the tune of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer): Prop 8 the wrong amendment was a big mistake you see. It changed the Constitution, stealing rights from you and me. All other Californians would be treated equallyyyy, except for gays and lesbians who no longer could marryyy. But this year Judge Walker … More >>
