Young Dems of America Awards MYD Outstanding Large Chapter of the Year

Fantastic news! MYD won Outstanding Large Chapter of the Year at this year’s Young Democrats of America conference in Louisville! This is the third consecutive time MYD has been recognized for our work — that’s six years in a row. We’re very excited to continue setting the bar for YD chapters across the country and continue to innovate and create new ways for young progressives to engage in our communities. Marriage Equality: We Did It.

When Kim called to tell me that we had word from Albany that State Senators Addabbo, Huntley, and Kruger were switching their 2009 “No” votes to “Yes”es on marriage equality, I couldn’t believe it. Then she told me that it was going to come to a vote, and the Governor’s office actually thought it had a decent chance of passing — and that was when I knew that all of the hard work we had put into fighting for marriage equality was worth it. Obama Speaks About New York Marriage Equality Debate

What do you think about Obama’s stance on this? OBAMA: Part of the reason that DOMA doesn’t make sense is that traditionally marriage has been decided by the states and right now, I understand there is a little debate going on here in New York about whether to join five other states and DC in allowing civil marriage for gay couples.
