SGK: WTF?
Unless you have been oblivious to the news of the past 48 hours, you know that breast cancer charity Susan G. Komen — which holds a”race for the cure” in New York City every year — has ended its partnership with Planned Parenthood and will not renew their grant, which provided access to breast cancer screenings for women across the country. Komen claims this decision has nothing to do with politics, but the public isn’t buying it. Their CEO, Nancy Brinker, is a Republican. Their vice president, Karen Handel, is anti-choice. Handel ran for governor of Georgia unsuccessfully as a Republican in 2010 and on her campaign blog, she wrote she “did not support the mission of Planned Parenthood” and … More >>
Hollaback! about assault on NYC subways
Chances are, if you are a woman living in New York City, you have a story about being harassed on public transportation — whether it’s a sexual comment, seeing a man expose himself in the corner of a subway car or an actual physical assault. We rely on our transit system to get around every single day, and yet for women, it’s also a place to be on constant alert for sexual harassment and assault. The recent story of the (awesome) college student who fought off her attacker and was able to snap his picture so he wouldn’t get away with his assault got a lot of attention, but there are countless other stories of harassment that go untold. It’s … More >>
MYD Women’s Committee hosts Miss Representation screening
More than 40 people came out Monday to learn about sexism in the media (and have some snacks) at MYD’s Women’s Issues Committee screening of Miss Representation! Although women make up half of the population, women hold only 3% of top positions in the mainstream media. The result? The country seeing nearly all of its entertainment, news and advertising from a man’s point of view. Miss Representation highlights the shocking prevalence of sexism in media coverage, including political media coverage, its impact on young women and how it will affect the country’s next generation of female leaders with powerful stories from Rachel Maddow, Nancy Pelosi, Gloria Steinem, Katie Couric and many others (including some men).
Fake Crisis Pregnancy Centers Still Allowed to Lie
We thought we were making progress. A new law that would require crisis pregnancy centers to disclose their services — and protect women from going to fake medical centers actually run by anti-abortion groups – was temporarily barred by Federal Judge William H. Pauley III. City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, a strong supporter of the legislation, said: “In issuing this injunction, the court has failed to protect pregnant women in an extremely vulnerable time in their lives.” When the City Council approved the legislation, Council member Jessica Lappin, who sponsored the bill, made the point that it “only regulates centers that are deliberately trying to deceive women into thinking they are in a medical facility when they are not. What those centers are … More >>
New York, too
Unfortunately like most other states in the country, a bill has been introduced in New York by Assemblyman Steven Katz to ban Planned Parenthood — and other organizations that provide abortions — from receiving any state money. This wouldn’t just affect organizations like Planned Parenthood (never mind the fact that only 3% of their work involves abortions), but hospitals, clinics and community health centers that perform abortions. According to Crain’s, Richard Gottfried, chair of the Assembly Health Committee, publicly blasted the bill: “A bill like this doesn’t belong in New York,” Mr. Gottfried said in a statement. “I will do everything I can to stop it cold and to protect the right to access to health care, including abortion.” It would … More >>
49 States trying to restrict reproductive rights
A catch up on women’s news: Planned Parenthood did not lose it’s federal funding (yay!), and apparently it is perfectly acceptable to lie in the Senate if you are trying to make a point (boo!). “Not intended to be a factual statement,” was Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.)’s repsonse when he was called out on his blatant lie about Planned Parenthood. Kyl said “If you want an abortion, you go to Planned Parenthood, and that’s well over 90% of what Planned Parenthood does.” In reality, it is 3% (it was corrected in the Congressional Record). Almost 40 years after Roe v. Wade was passed, why is a woman’s right to choose still up for debate? Anti-choice conservatives are furiously trying to … More >>
