Go Underground with MYD to Fight Violence in Transit
After hosting a panel discussion on facing gender violence on the subway and honoring Emily May, co-founder of Hollaback!, at this year’s Engendering Progress, MYD is taking the fight against violence in transit underground. The Women’s Issues and Transportation committees have teamed up with New Yorkers for Safe Transit, a coalition of organizations and advocates dedicated to eliminating harassment and assaults, particularly gender- or discrimination-based, on public transportation in New York City. On Sunday, May 20th, we will be at subway stops along the 4/5/6 in East Harlem from 2-5 p.m. collecting survey data from straphangers on experiences with harassment in transit. This survey will help New Yorkers for Safe Transit understand the types of violence and harassment that are … More >>

This Wednesday: Engendering Progress!
Please join the Manhattan Young Democrats at our third annual Engendering Progress, honoring women leaders, activists and trailblazers! Women’s news has been scary lately. Hillary Clinton said it best at the recent Women in the World Summit at Lincoln Center, “It is hard to believe that even here at home, we have to stand up for women’s rights and reject efforts to marginalize any one of us, because America needs to set an example for the entire world.” Come stand up for women’s rights with MYD at Engendering Progress – this Wednesday, March 21st, 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at Greenhouse, 150 Varick Street in Manhattan (21+). Our inspiring honorees fighting the good fight include: Hollaback! — A movement dedicated to … More >>
MYD’s Third Annual Engendering Progress!
Women’s issues have been in the news a lot recently. If you’re on birth control, guess what? Rush Limbaugh thinks you are a slut and a prostitute, just like Sandra Fluke, the woman who wasn’t allowed to speak at an all male hearing on contraception. Virginia lawmakers almost passed a bill requiring women seeking an abortion to undergo a vaginal ultrasound. And Susan G. Komen tried to de-fund Planned Parenthood. Before you lose your faith in humanity, come to MYD’s third annual Engendering Progress, where we will honor women and organizations doing good in the world. Engendering Progress will be held on Wednesday, March 21st, 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at Greenhouse, 150 Varick Street in Manhattan. Our inspiring honorees include: … More >>
We Heart Our Birth Control!
Add this to your Valentine’s Day plans: February 14th is a day of action for birth control. Spread the word! We saw the power of social media organizing when tons of people voiced their support online for Planned Parenthood, and we can bring the same energy to the birth control debate. What you can do: Change your Facebook photo to the iheartbc logo! Take pictures with these Valentines, tweet them to your representatives and use #iheartbc! Sign this petition! President Obama offered a compromise on Friday that would not require religiously-affiliated institutions to include birth control in their health care plans, and instead, the health care insurers would have to offer free birth … More >>
Support Women in Film!
The 2012 Oscar nominations were announced a few weeks ago, and for the 80th year (80 out of 84), the Best Director category included all male nominees. Check out Canonball for a list of five female-directed films some believed were snubbed. You can support women in film here in Manhattan — specifically, uptown at Barnard College. The second annual Athena Film Festival kicked off Wednesday with four days full of films by, for and about women. The Athena Film Festival is a joint partnership between Barnard College, the Athena Center for Leadership Studies and Women & Hollywood. On Friday, February 10th, members the MYD Women’s Issues Committee will be attending a screening of Ann Richards’ Texas, a documentary work-in-progress, followed … More >>
