Assembly Passes Marriage Equality

Last night, after hours of debate, the New York State Assembly passed Marriage Equality for the fourth time. Though the measure passed with 9 less votes in years past, most of those were due to shifts to the Cuomo Administration – including Roann Destito and Darryl Towns. One great anecdote reported in thenewcivilrightsmovement.com describes Assemblyman Nick Perry (D), who voted against Marriage Equality three times prior, voted yes this time. He finally came to the conclusion that “the freedom to live the life you choose to make you happy is a right everyone should enjoy.” Though, just to underscore the ignorance we still face, Assemblyman Dov Hikind held up a photo of Lady Gaga as he voted against the measure – … More >>

Breaking News: Senator Carl Kruger Turning Himself In

Just heard via NY1 that Senator Carl Kruger (D – Brooklyn) will be turning himself into the FBI tomorrow morning. It was reported by the NY Times last June that Senator Kruger was being investigated by the FBI.  Details are still coming in.  Check back here or via NY1 for more information as this story develops. Senator Kruger voted against Marriage Equality.  NY City administrative law judge Igor Oberman was going to challenge him in a primary last year, but he failed to get the signatures necessary to get on the ballot.

A Dash Of Holiday Spirit

For some mysterious reason, hundreds of children believe that Santa lives in Manhattan (specifically West 22nd Street in Apt #7).  It is the most random thing ever, except that the couple that lives have the biggest hearts ever: they actually try to respond to them all. The NY Times put together a video of their interview with the couple.  It’s incredibly touching and guaranteed  put you in the Holiday spirit. It will also make you question (for the 100th time) why gay couples are still denied the right to marry in New York. Some of the better quotes: “Children believe Santa lives in Chelsea.” When asked why they decided to try to respond to them: “That, to me, is like … More >>

Farewell, Senator Morahan

Last night, Senator Thomas Morahan lost his six-month battle with leukemia at the age of 78. Sen. Morahan represented Rockland and Orange Counties for over 10 years in the NY Senate, and though he was Republican, he was the most likely of the Right to reach across the aisle. Out of respect, the Democratic Majority made the historic move of naming him Chairman of the Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Committee while he was in the minority. He had broad support on both sides, as evidenced by the fact that he won reelection in 2008 with nearly 80% of the vote despite a Democratic enrollment advantage and Obama at the top of the ticket. You can read about the good … More >>

Know Thy Enemy

Too often we, as NYC residents, get stuck discussing ideas to the same like-minded individuals. Although this helps us refine our cause and intention, it gives very little insight into the minds of our loyal opposition. Try as we might, we just can’t convince a Republican with the same rhetoric we use with each other. If we could, they’d all be Democrats. So, how do we reach out and find common ground? If you figure it out, let the rest of us know, but to help you narrow it down a little, I’ll refer you to a recent Town Hall hosted by Republican Gubernatorial candidate Steve Levy. You see, Steve Levy was, until recently, a Democrat. He switched parties to … More >>

Census: It’s Important… Really, REEAALLLY Important

Right-wing radio is making an issue of the fact that the Census Bureau is over budget already. They also don’t think the money spent on the Super Bowl Commercial was wisely allocated.  I’m enormously supportive of the idea of the Census being everywhere, including the Super Bowl. In modern society, you have to be completely overwhelmed with something for it to register as a big deal. The Census is certainly a big deal. So I’m glad that I saw an ad at the movie theater last night. It’s on TV, fliers litter the streets, it’s in the papers, on the radio, even on the internet: Census 2010 Website (it’s actually pretty awesome; you should check it out). On that note, … More >>
