Take an active role in helping to formulate the transportation policies of the Democratic Party. Members of the Issues Committees will help formulate the policy stance of the Manhattan Young Democrats and identify legislation and candidates for MYD to support.
Members of issue committees debate policy and track related news through an MYD discussion list; organize speakers, panels and other events to increase awareness; and work with MYD’s President, VP, and Political Director to identify effective ways to influence policy. Issue Committee Chairs are elected by each committee and have a voting seat on the Executive Board.

Pedestrians, cyclists, and others traveling outside the safe confines of a motor vehicle face inordinate risks on city streets. To recognize these risks and protect pedestrians and cyclists, Albany should pass Hayley and Diego’s law, a bill that provides penalties for causing physical injury by failing to exercise due care when operating a motor vehicle. Buses and bus rapid transit are key elements of New York City’s transportation infrastructure. However, bus lanes on city streets are routinely clogged by cars and trucks illegally using lanes to bypass traffic. Albany should pass legislation to allow for camera enforced bus lanes to punish drivers who make bus travel slower for transit riding New Yorkers.
New York City should follow the lead of other word cities and adopt comprehensive congestion pricing; congestion pricing will lead to less cars on the road, cleaner air, more funds for transit, and enable buses to operate more efficiently on city streets and highways.
Citizens must feel safe when riding on public transit systems; government must provide robust security to protect riders from terrorism and crime, including increased use of CCTV, more police patrols, and increased funding for intelligence and anti-crime operations.
