I'm Young.  I'm Progressive.  Now What?

Environment

Take an active role to help formulate future environmental policies of the New York City. Members of the Environmental Issues Committees will:

1. Set Policies – Formulate the policy stance of the Manhattan Young Democrats and identify legislation and candidates for MYD to support;

2. Influence Policies – Work with MYD to identify effective ways to influence policy;

3. Conduct Grassroots Campaigns – Create change at a local level; and

4. Educate and Raise Awareness – Organize speaker series, panel discussions and other events.

Ban on “Hydro-fracking” in Upstate New York Watershed Areas

The Environmental Committee of the Manhattan Young Democrats supports a ban on natural gas drilling in Upstate New York watershed areas. Read more about “hyrdo-fracking”.

Greater Tax Incentives for Green Roofs Construction

Currently, a combination of state and city tax abatements exist to reduce the cost of constructing Green Roofs, but they are not enough. The Environmental Committee of the Manhattan Young Democrats supports the enactment of state and city tax abatements that cover the full cost of constructing green roofs.

The Environmental Committee also supports the creation of white roofs (roofs coated with solar reflective white paint).  White roofs are cost effective and environmentally friendly.  View the committee’s website www.whiteroofproject.com.
