I'm Young.  I'm Progressive.  Now What?

Education

Take an active role in helping to formulate the future education policies of the Democratic Party. Work to address an issue that influences the lives of all New Yorkers regardless of economic, social or cultural background. Our basic right to education is part of the fabric that crafts our urban experience but how we go about providing it has been confused by politics, money and issues of race. These filters have brought to light hidden truths and promoted damaging inaccuracies that drive us away from moving on changes for a system that is in dire need of repair. We’ll work to facilitate open discussions on these points and as a committee move forward with a plan that reaches out to advocates, elected officials and educators for ideas on how we can see action in public education. I encourage you to come help build a group worthy of the subject at hand.

Look forward to having you aboard.

Read the Education Committee’s 2010 Policy Positions here:

  • Protect spending and resources to Special Education and integration programs designed to help ESL students.
  • Enforce the policy that the children who are admitted to public charter schools should closely reflect the demographics of the areas in which they serve.
  • Maintain the extra instruction assistance currently making gains in underachieving schools by continuing to properly fund afterschool and Saturday sessions.
  • Establish art education as part of a well-rounded education by embedding it as part of all areas of the curriculum in grades K-12 public schools.
  • Secure funding assurances that will allow community and four year public colleges to grow and move towards making higher education a reality for all students. This will result in a more competitive workforce and stronger state economy.
