While election season is well underway and MYD members are canvassing for candidates in crucial races, we continue to endeavor to raise awareness about civic engagement and expand volunteer opportunities for our members.
If you attended our general meeting on Tuesday, you heard MYD member Amy Chen talk about the great work of iMentor. The mission of iMentor is to improve the lives of high school students from low-income communities through evidence-based, technology-enabled mentoring.
iMentor is working hard in collaboration with partners like the Manhattan Young Democrats to recruit new mentors in anticipation of serving 2,600 students in New York City’s low-income communities this fall. Mentors collaborate with students one-on-one by using iMentor’s curriculum to navigate the college application process and to build the foundation of skills necessary for success in high school and college.
To become a mentor, complete iMentor’s online application and sign up for a fun, one-time training. Once you’ve completed your application, an iMentor staff member will be in touch about next steps.
You can also take the online Mentor Pledge of support for iMentor’s mentoring program. The more people who take the pledge, the more mentors they’ll be able to recruit to help guide young people as they work toward college.
iMentor has been recipients of funding by organizations such as Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Lumina Foundation, New Profit and the Robin Hood Foundation.
