Google Launches New Political Map for November Elections
You can always count on Google to get in the game, no matter what the game is. New to Google and politics is an interactive daily compilation map of information pulled from Cook, Rothenberg, CQ-Roll Call, and RealClearPolitics. http://maps.google.com/intl/en_us/2010election/ratings.html MYD will play with it a bit and give it a review. Meanwhile, check it out and let us know what you think of this new tool!
Peace(ing) through Pakistan
President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize and has committed his administration to working towards a breakthrough in peace negotiations between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas. This has been possible through diplomacy and minimal U.S. military force; if only that could be said for our dealings with the Karzai led Afghan government and Pakistani officials. Terrorist activity continues and intransigent leaders stand solid in their opposition of American interests. White Roof Project: Keeping the Bowery Mission Cool!
New York City’s hottest Summer ever may be almost over, but the Manhattan Young Dems have spent the last 3 days making sure that next year, NYC will be just a little bit cooler. Over 100 volunteers gathered on the Lower East Side to coat the roof of the historic Bowery Mission with white, reflective paint. It was an amazing, exhausting and exhilarating weekend! With the help of the amazing staff and residents of the Bowery, we transformed over 10,000 square feet of roof from silver to white. Along with NYC Cool Roofs and White Tops NYC, we climbed through windows, up ladders and over metal beams to make sure that every last inch of that roof was covered! Check … More >>
Marriage Equality + New York
One of the things we’ve seen over the past few months is that the tide and atmosphere are changing and we are reaching critical mass around Marriage Equality. Prop 8 was struck down, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is on its back foot, a recent poll showed that for the first time ever more Americans are in favor of Gay Marriage than are opposed, and the front-runner for NY Governor, Andrew Cuomo, has pledged his support for a bill in NY. So how do we get across the finish line? The first and most pressing goal is Marriage Equality in NY. We came ever so close in 2009, but close isn’t good enough in 2011. There is a two-pronged strategy for … More >>
Charter-Friendly Candidates Lose Decisively In The 2010 Primaries
Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy With the primaries over, the final results did not come out how many education reformers had hoped. State Senator Bill Perkins and State Senator Shirley Huntley beat back challenges by charter school supported candidates Basil Smikle and Lynn Nunes respectively – each candidate coming in below 25% of the total vote despite sizable donations from wealthy supporters giving both contests a chance at being competitive races. Whether it was name recognition or a disenchanted electorate, the decisive power of teacher unions proved itself by providing invaluable funds and manpower to their preferred candidates. In the nation’s capital, education policy dominated this year’s Mayoral Democratic Primary where incumbent Mayor Adrian Fenty was unseated by City Council … More >>
