Democratic Primary Candidates to Talk Transportation Starting This Week
Politicians have a lot more to do with crowded trains, late buses, dangerous intersections, and new bike lanes than many people realize. We wouldn’t be preparing for a $100 (or $130?!) MetroCard if state lawmakers had voted to fund the MTA with measures like congestion pricing or East River bridge tolls — and hadn’t voted to siphon $143 million from the public transit system and use it for other programs last year. And new ways of getting around, like better bus and bike lanes, can be helped or hindered by our elected officials. To get candidates’ views on these very bread-and-butter issues, Transportation Alternatives has taken the lead on organizing three transportation-related debates ahead of the NYC primaries, starting this … More >>
The Danger of National Ignorance
A true story of willful denial on a national scale (he’s talking about US). “At its worst extreme, a culture of misinformation can produce something like Iran, which is run by a Holocaust denier. It’s one thing to forget the past, with predictable consequences, as the favorite aphorism goes. But what about those who refuse to comprehend the present?” Read the whole, depressing article here: http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/08/25/building-a-nation-of-know-nothings/

Majority of New Yorkers Want Continued Democratic Control of the NYS Senate
While polling at the national level for midterm elections has looked grim for Democrats, it looks like the story is more positive at the state level: New York Democrats have had to face a rocky economy and recession-induced budget shortfalls in their first few years as the majority party in the State Senate. But New York voters remember the previous 40 years of GOP control, and according to a new Siena College poll, only 27% of New York voters want to go back: 33%: Want to see Democrats expand their State Senate majority 34%: Prefer the status quo, in which Democrats hold a narrow edge 27%: Want to see Republicans re-take a majority This has to be unwelcome news for State … More >>
Goals for Life & America Scores
Last Sunday the women of MYD attended America Scores‘ “Goals for Life” soccer challenge, and guess what? We came in second! Proof positive that The Manhattan Young Democrats don’t inherently suck at sports. Though it’s most likely that we did so well because we had such a fantastic time! Special thanks to Elizabeth, Heather, Kat and Emmy who really did all the physical stuff and to Robbie of America Scores for giving us the opportunity to play on center court at Madison Square Garden for a while. The sports component was followed by an inspired talk on how to achieve a positive work-life balance. We want to thank America Scores for all the hard work they do to enhance the … More >>
Deputy Mayor Suggests Plan To Make NYC Government Leaner
Just four months after being appointed by Mayor Bloomberg to head the Office of Operations, Stephen Goldsmith has hit the ground running while gaining the confidence of good government groups and administration critics on the way. The recent praise has come after two recent reports analyzing cost efficiencies in mayoral agencies with a separate report exclusively on the Department of Education. Highlights included a drastically different picture than the top down, highly-organized bureaucracy normally professed by City Hall officials. Surprising many, Deputy Mayor Goldsmith pointed out multiple areas where officials have been wasteful and prescribed belt-tightening adjustments which could save the city $500 millions over the next 4 years. Recommendations focused on operational efficiency and accountability, with suggestions in the … More >>
