Weiner Goes (Appropriately) Nuts On 911 Health Care Bill
From the Huffington Post: House Republicans late Thursday were able to corral enough votes to defeat a bill that would have provided up to $7.4 billion in aid to those sickened by toxins resulting from the 9/11 attacks. In the process, they set off a host of fiery speeches and denunciations from their Democratic colleagues and produced a veritable YouTube moment from Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y), whose district includes many of the affected. Well worth watching:
Act NOW On The Shareholder Protection Act of 2010
The House is debating the bill right now… exercise your rights as a citizen in real time! Watch live, and email your congressman with the form letter below: YOUR NAME YOUR ADDRESS YOUR PHONE NUMBER Dear Congressman ________, I live in your district and support H.R. 4790, The Shareholder Protection Act of 2010. The recent Supreme Court ruling in the “Citizens United” case protects corporations as an association of individual citizens with rights to participate in the political process. By that same token, this association of citizens, i.e. corporate shareholders, has the right to determine how their corporation participates, and that means voting to determine how corporate money is spent or donated. Under the law, corporate shareholders already have oversight … More >>
100 Days
There are now less than 100 days until the midterms (99 to be exact) and this could turn out to be the most important 100 days of Obama’s first term. The sprint to the finish sets up well: the BP oil spill is capped, financial reform has passed, and health care reform is well in the rear-view mirror. The next three and a half months will be action packed. We could see: A new Supreme Court Justice A major overhaul to campaign finance reform in the wake of Citizens United A Climate/Energy reform bill that puts us on a sustainable energy path Immigration reform – AZ laws are downright wrong Repeal of DADT A second stimulus package That … More >>
The Kids Are All Right
Our findings revealed, for the first time, that young children adopted early in life by lesbian and gay parents were as well-adjusted as those adopted by heterosexual parents. That’s the conclusion reached by researchers at the University of Virginia. The study followed 106 families, about half of which were headed by gay couples. They found that “…regardless of whether they had one mother and one father, two mothers, or two fathers, children were thriving.” Luckily only 3 states currently ban gay couples from adopting children: Utah, Mississippi and my home state, Florida. But this is not just about gay adoption. This is about recognizing that families headed by same sex couples can be just as happy and healthy as families … More >>
Target Funds Rabid Anti-Gay Politics
Here’s how it works – Target has given hundreds of thousands of dollars to Tom Emmer’s PAC, a very anti-gay MN politician running for Governor. Emmer is a good friend of Bradlee Dean, the front man for Christian Rock group You Can Run But You Cannot Hide which has appeared as various GOP events and who he has referred to as “nice people”. While Emmer is anti-gay, his friendship with Dean gives us an idea of how anti-gay. Bradlee Dean literally wants to kill homosexuals and has said things like: “[Homosexuals] play the victim when they are, in fact, the predator. On average, they molest 117 people before they’re found out. How many kids have been destroyed, how many adults … More >>
About Time: Momentum Builds for Senate Filibuster Reform
So we’ve blogged here before about the filibuster: Vice President Joe Biden said at a Florida fundraiser Sunday that the 60-seat threshold for passing legislation in the Senate put a dangerous new roadblock in the way of American government. “As long as I have served … I’ve never seen, as my uncle once said, the constitution stood on its head as they’ve done. This is the first time every single solitary decisions has required 60 senators,” Biden said. “No democracy has survived needing a supermajority.” One year later — some progress? Momentum is building to reform Senate rules that allow silent filibusters and force a 60-vote requirement for virtually any action, interviews with Democratic candidates and sitting senators indicate. Democratic … More >>
